BLACK’S RACES.
—c (COMMUNICATED.)
Tliis Annual event came off on Tuesday ! ami Wednesday, the IT'.h and ISth instant, and proved an extraordinarily successful r!td ci joyablc affair, despite the counter attractions in nearly every part of the wide spread Dnustan district. The attendance of visitors was good ; in fact, it is doubtful if more people have he*m congregated together at 111 ick’s for many years past. The com] eting steeds were in good force, and the weather was every tin i g that could have been desired. As I said before, the faces were a success, anil no small credit is due to the Committee. Outhe evening of the second day (Wednesday) there was a hall and supper at the Shamrock Hotel, which proved as successful as the races, and at. which 'he fun was carried on, fast and furious, till—well, next day. Mr. M'lntosh, of Birch’s Hotel, had charge of the booth on the racecourse, and from the continuous call upon him for somo of the most excellent beverages ho was dispensing must conclude his takings were sufficient to inaki the speculation a good one. L did not hear either he or his customers complain. consequently I infer all were pleased. The racing for every event was honest, each horse, from start to finish, laying himself down in right good earnest to win if Jio could. This added excitement to the sport, ami mainly tended to produce the desirable result I have sp ikon of. 1 am sorry to say .vinos' disgraceful scene occurred on Thursday This was a brutal fight between two or three men, residents of the place, snd men who 'should have known bettor, ft was not a fair stand-up fight for a bellyfull between man and man, but a kind of “do the host you can” sort of a thing, resulting in the complete diswhiskermg of one of the combatants and the thorough prostration of the others. I do hear that "mi has been sent to the Dnustan Hospital for relief. I hope it is not so bad as this ; hut he truly deserved a good sound thrashing. The result of the rcces is as follows— Maiden Plate of 10 «ovs. Distance one mile and a half.
