DUNSTAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL, —o'— To the Committee of Management of the Dunsfttn District Hospital. Gentlemen, Having been given to understand the general wish of the Subscribers to your Hospital is that 1 should again offer myself as a Candidate, I herewith do so, and for the following reasons, viz. .—Having had sufficient opportunity of testing the feelings of the Subscribers and public at large, I am of opinion that very possi'dy it may be for my advantage to remain in this district; in faet, on this point I am now better satisfied than I was some time ago, i.e. before 1 forwarded my designation. 1 am, however, of the same opinion as regards the salary you offer—that it is altogegtber inadequate; and, if elected, I shall look forward to this matter being thoroughly and impartially considered, both by the Committee and Subscribers throughout the district. Trusting my views, as hete briefly expressed, will meet with your due consideration and approval, I remain, Gentlemen, Yours very respectfully, ROBERT W. STIRLING. Dunslan District Hospital, •Jan. 2, 1875.

Why is the early grass like a penknife ? Because the spring brings out the blades. in the office of a Wisconsin journal there is a compositor who seta type so vapidly (says the pajiCv) that the friction of his movements fuses the leaden emblems in his stick, making them solid, like stereotype plates. The only way to prevent this is to have his case 'submerged in ■water; and the rapidity of his motions ■ keeps the water boiling and bubbling, to \ that eggs have frequently been boiled in | the space box. Pipes lead from the bottom of his case to a boiler in the press-room, and the steam generated by the fast compositor’s movements runs the machinery. In one day he set so much that it took all hands from editor to devil, two weeks to read the proof, and it wasn’t his good day for setting type, either.
