NEWS FROM THE HAAST.
The following items of news from r the Baast arc furnished hy the Okarito correspondent of the Westland Register Intelligence arrived from the H.aast rush during the week to the effect that several of the parties who had been prospecting in the main creek have been rewarded for their perseverance by their ground proving payable, although not extraordinarily rich. The best claim is said to be that of Jamieson and party, known in the district as the “ Pardowncrs, ” four iu number, who, it is said, are making Coz. per week, that is an ounce and a half per .man. The other parties, amongst whom are Dec and party and M’llain and party, are not doing so well, though their ground is considerably favorable. These are certainly rather puny results so far, from a place about which such a furore was created, hut with such a sample of golel as that obtained in the locality, there is the hope of meeting with some hcavy’dabs to stimulate the miner to perseverance so long as he can pet sufficient to clear expenses, which, in my opinion, there will he no great, difficulty in getting, and in this way I have no doubt the district will henceforth maintain a scattered population, even if no extensive deposits should bo discovered to employ a concentrated one. But What time may bring to light it is impossible to say. Fox and party who had been out prospecting, had returned to the Haast, and were about starting on another expedition.
The Ross Guardian learns from an old experienced miner, who lately returned from the Haast, that he would not be at all sut prised at a good diggings being found in that ne ghborhood. He says that in every little gully small nuggets are found about the roots of the grass ; and instances ■ that the' Totara, Donnelly’s Creek, and i Domrghne’s wore being worked long before j Jonesk was thought of.' Had he not ' had a share in a payable claim to come back to he would not have returned. As there are about sixty miners prospecting ,at the Haast at present, the auriferous resources of the country should be well ( tested.'
