(Communicated). A meeting of the ratepayers convened by Mr. J. C. Chappie hy advertisement, was held in the Library Hall on Monday evening last, to take into consideration the conduct of the Mayor on the water supply question, fourteen or fifteen ''persons were present. After some considerable difficulty the Chair was occupied by Mr. Oeor e Evans. Mr. Chappie said he Lad convened the meeting to obtain an expression of opinion by tbs ratepayers on the action taken by the Mayor in taking out a criminal informition against him—he then narrated the circumstances. He sail for years past he hail enjoyed a supply of water to his house and garden from the water-race, now the property of the Cor]«irati mof Alexandra; finding that the water was cut off from him, ho wrote to the Council an I c >mplained, pnintin ' out at the sa nr tine tint othirs were allowed the privilege denied t > him , in the course of s >me day< he received a reply to the effect that the Council coni 1 not allow water to bo diverted, an 1 on tbe same dav he received the summons for rem wing gravel from the surface of a carriage road. Mr. Chappie then explai icd that on the morning of th“ day he received the summons, he had laid down a pipe from the Corporation race under the raid to his garden—he sai l the ratepayers money had purchased the r ice and, he thought every o e should benefit hy it, he was as good a citizen »s any. and he thought the action of the Mayor in layi .g a orirain il nform.ation against him a disgrace.
