In Westminster, in June last, a boy'of fourteen hanged himself in a most determined manner, simply because he was disappointed with the fit of a new suit of clothes. One would imagine that a barge would be rather an awkward thing to steal, more especially when laden with 900b worth of merchandise. Two men, however, have been committed for trial for making the attempt. A letter carrier has been sentenced to five years penal servitude for stealing a packet containing a large quantity of Cape diamonds. At Salford a man has been committed for trial for attempting to drown two boys. When appealed to for help, he replied, “No! Let the young hounds drown. lam plagued of my life with them throwing stones.” Lately, while same volunteers were drilling in Trentham Park, Stafford, a smart shower came on, and the simultaneous attempt of two corps to take possession of a tent resulted in a disgraceful fight, in which one of the officers was knocked down and badly injured. In consequence of the sudden falling in of a level roof in a Welsh mine, recently, six men were buried alive for fifty hours, when they were dug out uninjured. They had been the whole of the time without food. A park, the gift of a Mr. W. J. Evelyn to the town of Deptford, is nearly completed. It adjoins the ancient manor of Staycs Court, where Peter the Great lived when working as a shipwright in the dockyard. A Airs. Thomson, daughter of the poet Burns, died lately at Crossmyloof, near Glasgow, in the eighty-fourth year of her age. The yacht fleet of Great Britain numbers two thousand seven hundred. The magistrates at Huddersfield have decided that until game had been aimed and fired at poaching could not bo provad, and that the summons should he taken out for trespass. A German, who had recently been unsuccessful in an action tried before Baron Po - lock, has been convicted of threatening to shoot the Baron, and ordered to find sureties for his good behavior for six mouths ; failing which, he is to be imprisoned during that period.
