NEWTOWN, TINKER’S CULLY.

(COMMUSICATEn.) rCpt. 1. On Saturday evening last, the loth mt., a numerously attended mooting of the residents of Tinker’s Cully and tUe out-lying districts was held at Messrs. J. and C, Miller’s Newtown II del. Tinker’s, for the purpose of forming a Progress Committee, to watch over the interests of the district. Mr. W. C. Holmes, who was voted to the chair, in opening the mooting, spoke at some length on the necessity of taking some action to bring forward their wants befdte the Government. A very large amount of revenue had beui derived from the district, and, so far as be knew, little or no acknowledgment bad been made by tbe Covei nment in either one shape or the other. The district was daily becoming more important, and as the centre of a large and prosperous mining community, deserved better from the hands of the Government. There was no direct road from any one place to Tinker’s, and he thought it was high time that want in particular was attended to. Several other gentlemen addressed the meeting, after which a committte of seven was appointed, under the title of the Matakanui Progress Committee. A deputation was thin appointed to wait on Mr. Horace Bastings, Secretary for the Gold-fields and Mr. J. Hazlett, Member for the District during their visit to this locality, and urge upon them to use their influence to obtain a grant of money for making tbe road direct from here to Black’s, with a branch road to Tiger-bill. Your correspondent cannot but think this impiortant district lias hitherto boon entirely neglected, and it is surely time we should have a share in the expenditure of the pmblic revenue. 1 am pleased to inform you that mining is flourishing, and than not an idle hand is to be seen. This pdea.-ing state of affairs is produced by the abundance of water that flows from every source, and as the supply is being replenished nearly every day, there is every pirospiect of the supply keecping up tor a very long way into the summer.
