—o—-.-I**'" < General Assembly Election. [Tha following is condensed from the “ Wakatip Mail:”] The nomination of candidates for the s-at in the House of Representatives, vacant by the resignation of Mr. - Halleusteiu, took place at the Court House, Queenstown, on Saturday last, the 16th instant. There was a good attendance. - Si At 12 o’clock, Mr. R, Beetham, Returning Officer, read the ,’writ ’for| thej election, and announced that he was prepared to receive nominations. Four gentlemen were nominated, viz : Mr. G. B. Barton, proposed by Mr. M. J. Malaghan, seconded by Mr. Yewlett; Mr. Vincent Pyke, proposed by Mr. Douglas, seconded by Mr. Roskruge ; Mr. Alexander limes , proposed by Mr. Tyiee, seconded by Mr. Harris; Mr, Henry Manders, proposed by Mr. M‘Bride, sen., seconded by Mr. G. Smith. The show of hands was decidedly in the favor of Mr. Manders. A poll being d ■ m imled, which was fixed to take place on the 19tb inst. The several candidates addressed those present, urging their claims upon the support of the electors. * Towards the time for the closing of the poll great excitement was manifested. It was generally thought that the victory would lie between Messrs. Manders and Pyke, and the result proved such to be the case. About half past 4 the Returning Officer announced the result of the poll as follows: Pyke 223 Manders... ... 192 lanes ... ... 174 Barton ... 101 Thus giving Mr, pyke a majority of thirty-four votes.
