At a special meeting of the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, held on the loth, the following resolutions were unanimously agreed to : “That a memorial bo forwarded to the Hon. the Postmaster-General protesting against the Otago-Suez mails being brought and despatched via Hokitika, that sendee being totally unsuitable ; and that the Provincial Council be asked to make a similar protest. “That a memorial (in which the public shall be asked to join) be presented to the House of Representatives protesting against the English mails for Otago being put on board boats sailing from Melbourne for Hokitika, and asking for a more favorable servioo. “That a memorial (in which the public shall be asked to join) he presented to the Provincial Council, asking the Council to take steps to provide a mail communication between Port Chalmers and Melbourne, in connection with the Suez mails, suitable to the requirements of this Province, in the event of tho General Government not modifying the arrangements lately made, so as to give direct communication each wav. via bluff Harbor. “That tho Committee wait upon his Honor the Superintendent, and ask his cooperation with them towards scouring a more favorable arrangement for the English Mail Service.”
