CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.

—o— The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening last the 2nd instant at 7 o’clock. Piesent, Mr. J. U. Cambridge, Mayor, and Councillors Naylor, Auckland, Beck, Marshall and Cox. The minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed. The inward correspondence, as follows, was read and received—First, from the Secretary of the Dunstan District Hospital, with respect to the supply of water to the Institution from the Corporation race; 2nd, from Messrs. Attfield and Wdsmrd, asking that the Town water-race be made on the high level as surveyed by Mr. Arthur . 3rd, ficm Mr. Tyrrell, pointing out the bad state of tie main road at the scuth end of the Town, and urging upon the Council the i o csslty of at mice forming ttejsame. f • t , from Mr. Tjrrell, drawing attention to the dangerous state of the culvert, and the entrance to the new stree“t running at the rear of the west side of Sun-derland-street. The outward correspondence, as follows, w.sjrcad and adopted—Firm the Town Clerk to James Hazlelt, Esq., M.P.C., drawing his attention to local matteis requiring attention from his seat in the Provincial Council, accompanied by copies of corrosion lenoo to the late member for ths District on matters referring to tin Town, als), opy of a Memorial to his Honor the Superintendent, praying that a sum of money he placet on the Estimates for a new Court House at Clyde. In considering the c irrcspondence, the following resolutions were adopted That the Town Clark inf inn the Secretary of the Hospital that for the present the Committee can continue using water from the Corporation race, free of charge. An amendment wai moved by Councillor Beale tint tha Hospital committee be charged at the rate of m. per annum for the water, there being no soco ider it lapse 1. That the letter of Messrs. Attfield and We'nford stand over until the conei ’e a t; on of the Water Works Act by the Council. That Mr. Tyrrell’s letters he referred to the Public Works Committee, who were instructed to report thereon at the next meeting. The Mayor laid on the table the Water Wortcs Act, and said, —Now that the, Corporation had the command of a sufficient amount of water to supply the Town, he thought the time had arrived for a regular water scheme to be inaugurated, he had carefully gone over the Act, and considered that no difficulties stood in the way of having the Corporation's water so utilized as to he of benefit to every olio in the Town. To check a fire, in the event of one unfortunately starting, the water as at present was hut of little use, whereas if it were carried at a greater elevation, a lire could be quickly extinguished. He then read the various Sections nf the Act conferring powers on the Corporation to construct water-works and levy rates. After considerable discussion it jwas resolved, That a sub-committee, consisting j of Councillors Hazlett, Naylor and Auckj land be appointed to draw up a report, embodying suggestions as to what course should be pursued. Several accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting closed with the customary vote of thanks to the Chair.
