OPHIR
0 — ( FROM A CORRESPONDENT.) June 25. Permit ffle to offer my congratulations to the electors o'" the Huns tan District in the choice of their Member this time—they have shown by their action on Friday last, that they will not he satisfied with rotten promises any longer, they have had enough of that system, what wo want now arc men o; action, not mere wind-bags, got up fertile purpose of.gulling the masses at public meetings, and making their addresses suit whatever particular locality they may happen to be in, for the purpose of getting votes, let us hope that when Mr. Hazlett again comes before us, ho will he able to point to some measures that he has carried or endeavored to carry, not only for the good of the Province generally, but also fertile good of the particular District that he represents. I have heard on very good authority that Mr, -Shepherd stated in Clyde that lie did not say at Blacks that, ho got thCr'-Clyde School I must ccitainly contradict tikis statement of his, and if it should he necessary, I can obtain the signatures of nearly every "person that was in the room that he did say so. 1 see, also, by your report of his speech at the nomination—he says ho got-3,500 acres of land at Ida Valley, and 2,500 acres at Spotts Creek, now I might ask, why did ho not say this at Blacks ; he knew, had he done so, that ho would have been contradicted, for he' had no more to do with applying for this land than I did. The Black’s Progress Committee applied for it, and urged it upon the Superintendent and Mr. Bastings, when they were here—that letter too that he trolled out at Clyde from the Black’s Progress Committee, wky did ho not show it to us when ho was here? I suppose ho forgot to tell .you t bat it was over live years old ; he lias preserved it well, however, he is beaten, and I will not make one to crowd over a fallen foe ; let him take a lesson from it, or his seat in the Assembly may slip from him as easily as his .seat in the Council did. There is some talk hero of getting up a petition, asking him to resign, but 1 don’t think he is on for that. What is going to bo done about the removal of our Warden? Arc no further stops to be taken in the matter?—We must bear in mind that, it is not only the Warden that is removed, but our Registrar of Birtbs, &c. Black’s is now a Registration District, and Mr. Carew is the Registrar for it l —there is no person but him can register either a Birth or Death in the Blacd’s distiiot. Another thing,!l contend that we are as well entitled to the services of a Warden as many other districts. The Progress Committee have written to the Government about it, but as far as 1 can learn, they have not received any answer. I would suggest that public meetings should be held in every part of the district, and the matter should he taken up warmly, and we should make ourselves heard, and point out that we will not he satisfied without a Warden stationed at Black’s. I wish to draw the attention of the Dunslan and other Miners’ Associations to the 20th clause of the new Gold Fields Bill,
I think it is one that should be strongly objected to. We had a fair fall of rain here on Saturday and Sunday last ; this should give a good supply of water. The Dunstan Ranges also received a good coat of snow ; this will do good for the miners, but, will put our roads in a fearful state ; I have urged the repair of these roads so often, that I ■am getting tired aud thoroughly disgusted with the subject. Ido not expect we shall have our up-mails delivered to anything like their time again for the next three months at the least.
