—o— Dunstan District. The officiil declaration of the Poll was 'made on Monday the 23rd instant at noon by W. L. Simpson, Esq., Returning Officer, from the steps of the Clyde Court House. The-following were the numbers polled : Hazlett. Shepherd, Clyde 128 7 Alexandra 44 53 I Drybread 29 33 Black’s 43 4 Mr. Hazlett was then duly elected. SHEPHERD. 'Clyde, June 20, 1873. To the Electors of the Dunstan District. Gentlemen : 1 have the honor to return you my hearty thanks for the independent support afforded me aftthe late election. I have been much gratified during my canvass, by the confidence expressed in me by the Electors, including many, who supported my late opponent. Should Mr. Hazlett at any time resign the representation of the District in the Provincial Coudcil, I shall feel it my duty to again place my services at your disposal. •Wishing you all success and prosperity, I remain, Youi’s faithfully, T. L. SHEPHERD. Clyde, June 21, 1573, Ur. Joseph Hastie, Chairman of Mr. Hazlctt’s Committee said, as Mr. Hazlett, the elected candidate was unavoidably absent, he desired to say a'few words for him. He sincerely and heartily returned thanks for thosupport accorded Mr. Hazlet t, and for the honor conferred on him by placing him at the head of the jell by so large a majority. A groat deal had been said ■about measures and men, bo believed in ’Mr. Hazlett ihc cleotors would find they had as their representative a good man, and a good advocate of good measures. The lime was not far distant when they would have an opportunity of judging if they were wise in their choice. He would again return thanks. A votc-of thinks was then accorded tho Returning Officer for tho satisfactory way he had performed Ids part of the elections. The few assembled dispersed. Kawarau ward. (From the Cromwell Argus.) On the occasion of turning the first sod of the Brunner Railway, District Judge Harvey said “there was no doubt tho railway would pay, because if a railway were made through the desert of Sahara or to Timbnetoo, it would pay eventually. An editor asserts that his ancestors have been in the habit of living a hundred years. His opponent responds by saying that that was before the introduction of capital punishment.”
