At the nomination of Candidates for Membe/hf the Provincial Council which took place on Thursday, the 19th inst., Messrs. M'Kellar, Cololough, and Vincent Pyke were brought forward. The show of hands was—Colclough, 15; M’Kellar, 13 ; Pyke, 2. A poll was demanded by Mr. M’Kellar, which was fixed for Saturday, the 21st instant. Dunstan. Mr.Hazlett, since the nomination, has addressed meetings, at Alexandra on Saturday last, the 14th instant; at Spear Grass Flat on the ICth, at Black’s on the 17th, at Dryhread and Tinkers Gully on the 18th, and at Clyde on the 19th. On each occasion he was well received, and votes of confidence were adopted. As the substance of his addresses was the same as the one he delivered at the nomination, we do not deem it necessary to go over the same ground, and offer this as a reason for not publishing each speech. The same may be said about Sir. Shepherd. Mr. Shepherd took advant age of some of Mr. Hazlott’s meetings to communicate his views, and to tell the electors what he had done, and what he would do if again placed at the poll. On Wednesday evening, the 18th inst, ho held a meeting at Alexandra, when ho completely turned the tables on his opponent, and carried an unanimous vote of confidence. Feeling is running high over this contest, the partizans of each candidate being busy on their behalf, and leaving no stone unturned to place their man at the head of the poll. In another column the result is pixiphneied ; accordingly at that we will leave it. In reply to questions submitted to him at Alexandra, Mr. Hazlett said he was against selling auriferous lands, and w r as in favor of leasing lands contiguous to gold workings, and considered that greater facilities should bo given to prospectors of ground partly worked. If elected will pro. miso to urge the placing of special sums on estimates for road from Butchers Gully to Alexandra. The placing moneys on the estimates is often done, and none expended. Will see that whatever money is voted for the Dunstan District is expended. Will advocate for an extension of the commonage on Turnbulls run. if it is desired by the people of Alexandra, a bridge across the Molyneux, will guarantee to obtain from Government the same terms as for one at Clyde. Mr. W. Theyers proposed a vote of confidence in Mr. Hazlett, and on being put to the meeting, was carried by fully 50 out of the CO who were in the room. Mr Shepherd at the same meeting duringhis speech, said ho opposed the sale of the large block of land to Mr. Clarke. Mr. J. C. Brown advocated the sale to get money spent in his district. Assisted in obtaining the remission of sentence on M‘Ewcn, of St. Bathans, for shooting a Chinaman. . Assisted in giving municipalities fees and licenses. Mr. Macandrew and myself co-operate for the advancement of the Gold-fields. Do not receive any payment for time devoted in framing the Gold-fields’ Bill, ’Do not think it is perfect. It is in the hands of the miners, and from them any suggestions must come. Mr. Brown proposed a vote of confidence. On a show of hands being taken, a very few were held up. Mr. Shepherd said he questioned very much the justice of the thow of hands, and said the ballot box was the only place where expression of opinion shouln be given, and suggested the desirability of the press writing the system down as rotten.
