Duivcrlin, Thursday, 5, p.nl. The House has adjourned till seven to enable Eeid to complete arrangements. The Canterbury Provincial Council by 33 to 9 negatived the motion, that Government aid be 'not withdrawn from denominational schools, so long as they satisfy the requirements of the Education Board, as to discipline, attendance and secular instruction. An amendment to postpone withdrawal of Grant for three years was rejected. Strong efforts are being made to secure denominational schools a year’s grace. The salmon ova is not turning out so well as was expected. It is doubtful whether any will be hatched. A large public meeting was held at the Thames last'nigbt, to consider the present position of Native affairs. Resolutions were carried, 'affirming that in the opinion of the meeting that the recent murders are the result of Native maladministration during tho last four years. The meeting pledges itself to support the authorities in any manner deemed requisite, to give protection to the frontier settlements, and terminate for ever the power and influence of the Maori King. Several Native Chiefs spoke, advocating the upsetting of the King. Eeid submitted to the Superintendent the following names to form a Government : —Eeid, Secretary, Treasurer and and Secretary of Lands; Green, Eoads and Works ; Stout, Solicitor ; Lumsden, without office ; Brown, gold-fields* Tho Superintendent has refused to accept, and transmits to that effect.
