According to a contemporary no little stir has been caused in Hokitika by the fact that the matron and a nurse in the Hospital absented themselves from their duties Without permission, and employed their time on the racecourse dispensing drinks in a booth belonging to a member of the Hospital Committee. The matron made an apology to the Committee, and was pardoned ; and the nurse escaped the difficulty by getting married.
