MR. T. 11. SHEPHERD, M.P.C., M.H.R., AT TINKER’S GULLY.

—o — following summarised report of Mr. Shepherd’s meeting, held at Tinker’s Gully on Saturday evening last, has been handed to us for publication : Mr. Shepherd reviewed the past Session, and stated that the system of deferred payments for land, which he was the first to advocate in the Provincial Council, was now law, and would, he believed, prove a great success. He should endeavor to increase ■the quantity to be thrown open immediately from thirty •thousand acres to one hundred thousand acres if required, and the area to •be taken up by any one selector from two hundred acres to throe hundred acres, that being the quantity agreed to by the Provincial Council and House of Representatives, but reduced by the Legislative Coun cil to two hundred acres. His Honor the Superintendent would recommend, during the coming Session, that one or two blocks of two thousand five hundred acres each be thrown open in this district. He (Mr. Shepherd) said it was amusing to notice some of the members for the Gold-fields attacking Mr. Reid for selling large blocks of land, when they had for two years sup. ported him in that policy—a policy he had strongly opposed ; but, on a '<K vision, he had only two companions, Messrs. Green and Holmes, the fact being that members of Council were ready to sell large blocks •of land to raise money to spend in their own districts. Mr. Shepherd then explained thc'chicf features of the New Gold-fields Bill, prepared by Messrs. Haggitt, Mouat, and him self, which met with marks of strong approval. He stated that the Rill would shortly be circulated, and would be introduced by the Ministry early in the coming ■Session. Ihe following resolution was put to the meeting, and carried unanimously:—“ 'Jhat this meeting is of opinion that Mr. T. LShepherd has ably represented the district, and expresses its entire confidence in him as member for the district in the House cf Representatives and Provincial Council.” A vote of thanks to the Chairman (Mr. W.C. Holmes) closed the meeting.
