CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.

A special meeting ot the Council was held ou Saturday last, the 19th iuat. Present: Mr, J. U. Cambridge (Mayor), and Councillors Auckland, Hazlett, Marshall, and Nnylor. iho Mayor said he had called the meeting to consider the advisability of purchasing the water-race known as Hastie’s Pace, with the view of augmenting the present water-supply to the town. He explained that the race was in the market, and ho thought, if it were allowed to pass into other hands, the present unsatisfactory state of affairs would be perpetuated, and the town would for over without a permanent supply. Councillor Feraud said7the right was liable to bo cancelled at any t ; me without compensation. Councillor Hazlett said he had no doubt, in tlio bauds of the Corporation, the rights could be made secure, and that it would be far better for the Council to purchase the race and rights. With the rights in their possession, he thought, within the operations of the Water Works Bill, the Council would have a permanent supply of water in their own hands. After some further discussion, it was resolved, That, considering the existing arrangements by which the town of Clyde is supplied with water being most unsatisfactoiy, the Council deems it advisable t“ pnrchascjthe water-race and rights known as Hastie’s. Resolved, That the Mayor- and Councillor Hazlett wait upon Mr. Hastio, to ascertain on what terms he would dispose of his water race and rights. The Council, at this stage of tire prooeedings, adjourned for half an hour. On resuming : The Mayor said Councillor Hazlett and himself had waited on Mr. Hastie, who offered to dispose of his rights for 250f. They, however, informed him that, if he would take 20U/., the Council might possibly purchase. Mr.'Hastie was present, and said that ho would take the sum named, which was conditionally ag-’ced to. The usual vote of thanks terminated the proceedings. The usual mooting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening last, tire 23rd inst. Present: J. U. Wilson, respecting the lights to watcr.race proposed to be purchased frem Mr, Hastio by tlieCouncil; from the Secretary of the Ophir Progress Committee, accompanied by a memorial to the Postmas ter-Goneral, prajing for the extension of the telegraph from Clyde to Nasehy, via Black’s, and asking the cooperation of the Clyde Town Council. .Resolved, That the correspondence be read and'rceeivcd. Rosolvcl, That the resignations of Counciliars Feraud and Patterson be accepted. The Town Clerk was instructed to insert an advertisement in the Dinistan Times, notuyiiig the election of Councillors, in room of Councillors Feraud and Patterson, resigned ; the nomination to take place on the 23th of April, and the poll on the 2rd of May. Resolved, That section 4, Block Xf„ be let for a term of seven years to the holders of property abbntting on same, at a rental of 15s. a year each, uith the stipulation that a right-of-way shall always be kept open. After consideration of letter from Mr. F- J. Wilson, the Mayor and Councillor Hazlett were authorised to interview Mr. Warden Simpson relative to the waterrights of water-race proposed to be purchased, Resolved, That this Council take every means to further the request of the Ophir Progress Committee in having the line of telegraph extended to Nuseby, via B ack’s, and memorialise the Po tmrster-Gencral to that effect. Resolved—That the tender of James Conumv for leasing section 48, block XI, for a term of seven years, at a rental of 555. per annum, bo accepted, the rent to be paid in advance. A discussion ensued relative to the construction of a bridge across the sJolyneux, and resulting in a resolution—That a special mooting of the Council bo held on Friday the 27th instant, in accordance with'the XC\ 111 Section of the Municipal Corporation’s Ordinance, 1835, to give the Conned powers to cither borrow money for tlio construction of tbe bridge, cr to guarantee interest on tlio cost of construction to any party erecting the same. The Mayor was instructed to interview T. L. Shepherd; Esq., M,P.C. and M.H R., relative to the building cf a new Court House, and construction of road on West bank of the Molyncus. Account, petty cash V, ISs. 4d., expended by the Town Clerk, was passed for payment. The Public Works Committee reported that the culvert at the North end of Sin dcrland Street, had boon made for the sum of 4!. The amount uas ordered to be paid. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
