CAMPING GROUND FOR TEAMS AT CLYDE.

(TO THB EDITOR Oi? THE DUNSTAN TIMES. ) Sir,—ln a recent issue of your paper appeared a “local,” in which yon said that numerous complaints had reached yon of the nuisance caused by the carriers cl orsing to make their camping ground in the immediate vicinity of dwelling houses. One of those complain ants',was myself. Alter civily requesting carriers to camp a reasonable distance from my house, and, in more than one instance, being answered with foul-mouthed abuse, I, and as a rule treated with insolent contempt, I appealed to the inspector of Nuisances. That made no difference.* I then laidjnay complaint before the Sergeant of Police, but with no better success, for although that functionary gave me to understand I should not be further annoyed, he has been unable to abate the nuisance. Not a carrier, wellknown in the district as being exceedingly deaf, w'as camped only a short distance from several houses occupied by families, and the shouting and hollowing, not unmixed with language of a nature very objectionable, was, to say the least, a “ nuisance.” One of my neighbors exptstulated, but was only met with a volley of abuse On another occasion I was present when a resident quietly asked a carrier if he would kindly camp a little farther from his house on his next visit to Clyde, when the latter, using expressions I do not care to repeat, intimated his intention of shutting up his front entrance with the waggon the next time, and further intimated that, in the event of the person aggrieved saying anything more, he might feel assured of a ducking in the race. Now that this annoyance, 1 may say grievance does exist, no one can deny. The question is—where is the remedy? Who is responsible in the eorpoiated town, for taking such measures as shall enable the inhabitants to enjoy tbeir homes and comforts ? Is it the office of the police or of the Town Council! It is a maxim of Common

Law, recognised, by the highest legal authority, that no man shall be a nuisanco to his neighbor; and yet, in spite of our police establishment and our Municipal Council, the fact still remains, that the earners arc allowed, night after night, Sundays and week days, to infringe upon the comfort of the inhabitants of the town. Sometimes, and indeed often, these carriers attach bol s to one or more hoises attached to their teams, and as the animals to which , they arc fastened are those that can be must depended uponfor not straying, thenuisauce becomes augmented. I will not further encroach on your space, hoping the remarks I have made will bo taken in good part by the carriers, who, as a rule, are a respectable and respected class of men, and that they will give no further annoyance, or that th. proper authorities wid take measures to exterminate the nuisance. I am, ic., SUFFERER. Clyde, April 16, 1873. -- * o', --it - • i.rr
