[The news of tlie Dunedin Races reached us by Telegram ou Monday and Tuesday last, but as in another column a detailed statement is to bo found, we omit it under this heading.] Messrs Brogden’s tender for completing the first 44 miles for the Clutlia line has been accepted for £4,699 per mile. The setting up of rolling stock has commenced. The Government have purchased the Port Chalmers Railway for £175,000. The Company asked 220,009/. by proposing that Government should take the stock at par,and assume the liability upon 100, 000/, in debentures. The Government, however, have purchased shares at 5 and 6 premium, besides taking up 100,000/, worth of debentures. The purchase includes rolling stock, plant stations, and railway. At the Christchurch Jockey Club meeting a letter was read from the Secretary of the Australian Club, asking for information re Peeress. The following effects were said to be clearly proved. Walters was in confederation with a certain bookmaker who had his books full against Peeress, bought her afterwards, and then scratched her in accordance wwith a prearranged scheme—thus mulcting the public. The mare was perfectly fit to run. Until he public suspected confederacy, and refused to put more money on, her confederates operated freely against her, Tambourini to-day was sold for 400/,

CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL, A special meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday afternoon last at 3, p.m. Present, J. U. Cambridge, Mayor and Councillors, Naylor, Marshall and Auckland. The Town Clerk explained the object of the meeting was) to consider a telegram from Councillor Hazlett from Dunedin, regarding the Wai Keri Keri Water Supply. The following telegram was read.—Dunedin, March 26, 1873. Saw Superintendent. Government will not give Feraud more than half a head of water. 1 think if Feraud accept that, the Council ought to agree to it. After some considerable discussion it was resolved to telegraph in reply —That That this Council will not agree to Feraud having a permanent supply of half head of water ; in dry seasons the town would be left without any water. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chamber on Wednesday evening last at 7 o’clock. Present, the Mayor and Councillors Naylor Auckland and Marshall. The minutes of the adjourned meeting held on the 17th instant, and of special meeting hold in the aftemoon jwere read and confirmed. The inward correspondcnce'was read and received, consisting of letter from Mr. D. M'Pherson to the effect that he would remodel his punt, and make it sufficiently large to meet the required [traffic, to have the same completed in three months, if the Council would vote him the sum of 501. to recoup him for outlay in making approaches to the same. The outward correspondence was read and adopted. The Mayor said there being but a bare majority of the Council present, he did not think they were justified in authorizing the granting of any special vote, he, howeveri might say he was in favor of acceding to Mr. M‘Pherson’s request; there were other matters requiring attention when a fuller Council could be got together, and he would suggest thatffhe final dealing with the subject should be held over till the next meeting. A resolution to thaUeffectAvasjaceordingly passed. A,desultory conversation took place as to when thefother matters urgently requiring attention would be dealt with. It was finally resolved, That the meeting stand _ Monday the 31st instant, at 7, p.m.
