ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE

MINERS’ ASSOCIATION.

We do not identify ourselves with the ! opinions that may be expressed by our | correspondents,] —o—-

(TO THE EDITOR 07 THE DUN ST AX TIMES - ) Sir In noticing a letter from a miner in your last issue, you say he has struck the right chord, when he inquires rather pertinently about the Miners’ Association. My impression is that, ho wants also to strike another chord before his melody is at all harmonious, so that when he has to refer to tiro Miners’ Association, he might be able to use the pronoun we instead of they. If the Association be somewhat disorganised at present, I question whether it is not more the fault of many such as miner, than those who have been conducing the business of the Association. It was pretty well known among members that the first year of the Association expired in January last, and if the meeting then called for the enrollment of members afresh, and to receive the resignation of the outgoing committee, lapsed, as some say, because sufficient notice was not given, it is to be hoped the meeting which I understand is to take place soon, will not share the same fate. I would recommend miner to give up, wbat I may call howling in the distance and come forward and enroll himself as a member, and either take part in the proceedings, or assist to put men in office who will, I have no doubt, if there is anything for the general good he would desire to be done, , they will be most willing to do it. I would also wish to draw the attention of all miners, and all depending on the prosperity of the district, to also put their shoulder to the wheel. Miners’ Associations are but of late date, yot they have been of consider able service. The consideration they have received from all branches of oar legislature, ought to stimulate the miners to action, and not to leave it to the mercy of a few. Theie is plenty of work before them, Judge Chapman’s decision on Fcraud’s application, is not made public yet. The promises of the Cold fields’ Secretary arc not yet fulfilled ; the gold duty is only partly reduced ; the new gold-mining Bill will he circulated soon, and many other important subjects. Let one and all then throw aside the apathy, which is so prevalent among us as a class, anile: everyone consider, though their individual interest be not la>-ge, that by their standing aloof, they are hindering the work which others are striving to accomplish for the good of their class, and the success of Miners’ Associations will never be complete until every miner can, when referring to their doings, use the little word Wi instead of they. I am, &o, A MEMBER.
