DUNSTAN JOCKEY CLUB RACES.
Yesterday inaugurated the seventh Amiual Oil 113 tan Jockey Club Meeting, Using the eleventh annual meeting (independent of spring meetings) held on the JJunetm race-course. The first race meeting held in Otago, was in the year ISu?, at Silver Stream. In the following year the Punstan Races were instituted, and since then have been conducted with such cneigy and liberality that they undoubtedly clars only second in the Pro vines. The meeting of 1372-3; however, does rot come up to former ones, either in respect to the number of competing steeds or the attendance of visitors. Kor were the events mntosteJ with that avidity wo have seen on former occasions by the small fields that faced the starter. Various causes are assigned for this falling off; but, to oar nin 1 the true cause ir, there are too many race meetings in the district, and unless a combination is made, whereby one grand annual meeting t kes place for the entire district, the qua ity of the horses and their number will dwindle down to a mere nothing and the vaunted race meetings of Cromwell, Dry bread, St. Hainan's, Mount Ida, and Clyde, will be meetings of hacks rather than of thoroughbreds.
Tho weather had been variable for somo time past, but ye,3t r lay turned out moi t pleasant. The wind, however, which t.’c.v in gusls from the South, made it rather disagreeable for those frequenting tho grand stan 1; but ou the whole, the day was.moat pleasurable. Of the attendance, about three hundred people were present, but as most arrive! in vehicles to which they most persistently stuck, the crowd about the grand stand, or tho‘number ou the t"p w; s
