Mr. Fellows, tho newly appointed Judge for tlie colony of Victoria, and who, accompanied by Mrs Follows, has been making a tour through Few .•tealand, staved some days in Clyde-at the beginning of this ■week. M'e arc requested by the Treasurer of the Ttuustan District Hospital to acknowledge the receipt of the sum of Of. from the Alexandra Race Committee, being the proceeds of the Hospital Race at the recent meeting. A Telegraph Clerk named William Dickinson has been commitccl for trial at Manchester for disclosing the contents of a telegram. Tho Statutory Annual Educational Meeting for the Clyde district, will (it is announced by advertisement) be held in the School House, on Monday next, the 13th inst., for the porpose of electing a new School Committee - In connexion with school matters, we arc given to understand that in future, Mrs. Stevens will attend the school during the whole of the day. OnW r ednesday mnning, abouttwo o'clock, it was discovered that a large stack ot clover bay, containing some eighty tons, belonging to Mr. Williams, was on lire. From what wo can learn, only on the evening previous the stack had'boon tested to find if there was any sign of heating, and the result was that it was considered perfectly safe. Such, unfortunately, proved not to be the case, as, at the time indicated, it burst into a blaze. The distance from the town and the hour it happened, prevented the alarm reaching here, and it Mas not for some hours that any efficient assistance arrived on the scene. All that could be done, was to save as much as possible, and prevent the fire spreading. Besides theclover stack a rick of oaten hay caught fire, and but very little was saved of cither. This will entail a very severe loss upon Mr. Williams, for whom much sympathy is felt. The Queenstown Annual Race MoetiaJ? will take place on the ISth and 19th instant, and it is confidently expected there bo a. large attendance, and, from the number and quality of the horses entered, there is every reason to believe the auticipa’ion of good sporr will le filh justified by the result. The handicap weights, as pul dished in the local journal we publish for the information of. our sporting friouds, ss follows :—f ! rand Stand Handicap—'Tamhnunni, i(Jst 71b ; Burgundy, Hist Sib ; Malice, 10st; Excelsior, 7st 5)1>; Atlas, 7st 51b ; Brunette, 7st Sib Boomerang, fist 12. Onr Nevis friends have been anparently enjoying themselves dining th“ holiday season. On Christmas Day they indulged in the lime honored sport of horse racing. There was a goodly attendance both of bipeds and quadrupeds, and no lai k of sport, a"d although the prizes run for wore not excessive in vabie, the sport was undoubtedly good. The first race was for a ridin" saddle, for which eight horses smarted, and at" a very More e.-ntest was won by Mr. Harrisoi’s Maori Chief, weT ridden by his owner. Then fo’lowed a nrivate mateh. for 10/. a side, 'between Mr. Staite’s Bismarck, and Mr. Monroe’s Drummond "Lass, which was won-easily by the former. Six started for the Hospital Face, and Maori Chief landed again a winner, his rider Receiving a handsome silver mounted whip, presented by Mr. Alexander Joss, of Clyde. The amount collected for this event was C/. 18s., and it is confidently believed that had an earlier canvas been made there would have been a very considerable addition to that amount. \ arinus other sports contributed to enliven the day, and -everybody seemed to quite enjoy his Christmas. " -e have boon requested by the Secretary of the Dunstan District Miners’ Arsociation to notify that the First Annual General Meeting will take place' cn Saturday the 11th instant at S o’clock p.m. r n Saturday niglp lost, shortly after 11 o’clock, Detective Farrell was fired r at and wounded. The particulars appear to be— Farrell was on his way home, and while passing Moray-place heard footsteps rappidly approaching. Thinking they were those of a porsnn coming on tip-toe, and fearful of receiving a blow from behind, he prepared for an assault, and turned round just as the man was dose to him. The man, whom ho possitively asserts was an ex-Sergeant of Police named Ryan, pointed a pistol at, him and fired, hut wi'h-ut effect. Farrell said, “ For God’s sake, Ryan, don’t kill me. I’m not prepared to die.” Being unable to reach his assailant with the heavy stick he carried, Farrell threw it at him, and ran away towards homo. Two more shots were fired without- taking effect, but a fourth entered bis lack, striking the blade-bone, and passing out. On the first shots being fired some of the neigh'iors rushed out, and it said a man and a boy saw the last shot -fired. Mr. Farrell was promptly attended hy Drs. Hockcn and Reiner, and we ar=> happy to say that tbc wound, though severe is not considered dangernuf. About an hour after the occurrence Ryan walked into the European Hotel, wh»rc he was boarding,-and said : *• I hear the police have been inquiring for me : would some one bo kind enough to accompany mo to the station ?” Mr. Keligher proceeded with him towards the Mac-laggan-street Stalion. On (heir way they were nut by Sub-Inspector Mallard and two assistants, when Hyan was at enco awested. No firearms w r cro found upon him. Ryan was quite cool and collected, and quietly told the Suh-lnsncotor he was then cn his way to the station. On being charged with shooting with intent to kill, he said : “This is a pretty charge, certainly.” He was then locked up, and was subsequently removed to the gaol for greater security. On Monday, Ryan was brought up before the Mayor’s Court, bu' as the wounded man was unable to attend, accused was remanded for eight days, bail being refused Latest information is to the edict that Farrell is progressing favoroMy Neither any of the bullets nor tho pistol have been discovered. Tho right of erecting two booths fo" tne sale of refreshments during the forthcoming races, was submitted to public competition by Messrs Powell and Co., on New Year’s Day, but the highest bid not being considered satisfactory, the sale was adjourned On Monday the booths were again put up, and, after a rather tame competition, were knocked to Mr. Eichardt, of tho Queen’s Arms Hotel, for 60/. As this was the highest bid and by the same gentleman at tho first sale, it is gratifying to state that he received his just after all. Last year, the booths realised exactly the same amount ; as. although the meet is likely to he a most successful one—tho attendance will probably be entailed, in consequence of a great number of the settlers being busy at harvesting operations. The New South Wales Government have volunteered to pay half the expense of connecting Australia and New Zealand by cable. Our Arrow contemporary says that the Sports Committee, after paying all expenses handed over to the Hospital Committe, the very munificent sum of 1531. A dea*h from sunst’oko is repo-ted in the Tuapika Times. As Mr. A. Grant was riding along the Waitahnna r.-ad, in company with Mr. Eraser, a faintness came over him and heneariy fell from his horse, but was assisted to the ground by Liq fiienk .Reitorativcs were applied, and medical aesisance summoned, but unfortunately without avail, for on tic arrival of Dr. Hally, that gcutl.man pionotnacid him dotal. i
Ilia Excellency Sir George Bowen, aocompaaied l>y his Honor the Superintendent, will arrive at Clyde on jMouday next, the 13th inat. A grand Orange meeting, is to he held at 'he Thames next month. The formation of the Now Z aland Iron ■iud Steel Company is progressing favorably Messrs. Bright Brothers, agents for the steqnrer'G rent Britain, state that the reported suicide of Captafn Gray-is incorrect, anil that his untimely death is purely the result of accident. At the Supreme Court, William Thoinaa ; convicted of committing an indecent assault, has been sentenced to one year’s imprisonment and twenty five lashes. The Arrow Observer says “ After paying exirenses incident to the late sports the Committee find themselves enabled to pay over to the Hospital the sun of 150/.” The usual monthly meeting of the Dun- : st u Hospital Committee, to have been held on Monday last, for want of a quorum, I was adjourned till Friday evening (this day,) at 8 o’clock. A Regulation has been issued by the Provincial Government enacting that for future, applications to purchase land held under agricultural loa'se require to bo advertised for three weeks previous to being heard. Mr. J. Randispn passed through Clyde last night, on his way to Queenstown, his intention bein'.', by order of the Provincial Government, to open a direct bridle tiack to Martin’s Bay. In future issues wo hope to inform our readers of Mr- Saudison’s 1 pro cross, | The following gentlemen wo are informed will he'members of the new- Waste Lands’ Board :—Messrs. Henry Clark, A. W. i Morris, J L. Bntterworth, A. We remind those who ; intend to invest in this entepriae, that tbo ! list will close on the 31st inst. The names ; of the directors is a sufficient euara des of the bona fide nature of the speculation. The news- brought by the last mail is | generally unimportant. Wo notice the followin ' items :—The Groat Britain had arrived after a voyage of sixty three days. (Captain Gray, who has been many years connected with this vessel, committed suicide, "by jumping overboard, when thirty thirty days out.—lt is pronoso 1 to establish a new lino of s'camers between Liverpool and Melbourne.—Mr. Disraeli, it is rumored, will shortly retire from public life.—The valley of the Thames has been flooded, and a large quantity of grain and other property destroyed. A prisoner named IVer Robertson, lute of Russell stre, t, Dunedin, undergoing a sentence of twelve monlbs’ imprisonment with hard labor, for stealing a gold watch at Alexandra, the property of William Beaver, vvas t '-day brought'■ before Mr. Watt, lb IT ,’'at the Gaol, on a charge of stealing a-sum of money'at Alexandra, and Committed for trial.at the ensuing sissions. I The Wanganui Herald says:—“A gentle- j man Inßangilikci.who, through his wife has come into a princely fortune has just received a demonstrative proof of the reality: of the affair in a kind: of preliminary droniit lance amounting to 1190/.” By the last mail, w4 received from Messrs Letts and Co., of London, the celebrated i “tationors and diary makers, a catalogue of j their From its contents wo I learn that, every class of stationery ami j leather pood save turned out of their establishment,- and we would strongly advise those in the trade who do not receive them, to make application, as in the selecting of stock they must be a great assistance. The more noticeable.portion of tbe production however, to our mind, is the cover which is printed by a new process, lately patented by the firm, and styled the “Rainbow Printing.” The process, if the example before us is an average of wbat can be turned out, must, of a necessity, command notice, as the colors, of which there arc six, are beautifully bright, and we feel assured will, ere long, supersede all other processes of color printing. By old processes, each color required a separate printing, whereas, by tbe Rainbow, one impression products any number of colors. About two o’clock on Friday morning last tbe townspeople of St. Bathan’a were alarmed by tbe dread cry of “Fire ” Everyone hastened to tbe scene of conflagration, which proved to be the Montezuma Hotel and store, ow ned and occupied by Mr. P Mellon. The piremis's were occupied by Mr. Mellon, bis brother, and a female servant. Somewhere about 2 o’clock the girl noticed the smell of fire, and immediately rose and gave the alarm, and it was in all probability through her strong nerve and energy that the brothers were not burned to death ; as it was, they escaped with merely tb6 articles of clothing they were sleeping in. Under Mr. Mellon’s pillow was a sum of 47/., in one of the pockets of his trousers : but this, unfortunately, ho had not time to save. A number of able and energetic men were quickly on the spot ; but, owing to the inflamablo nature of the building and stock, the place was soon completely gritted, and everything burned to ashes. Fortunately not a breath of wind was stirring at the time, otherwise the consequences would have been far more serious. At one time it was greatly feared the flames would extend to the school house on the one side and,to Mr, Prescott’s on the other. Fortunately the only fur. her damage done was to the school-house, the side of which was a little charred and tlie_ panes of glass were broken, by the intense heat. Not even Jdwrbobks, let alone anything else, were saved, and as Mr. Mellon is highly respected; as an rip-right, kla-.i, and generous man, treat sympathy is fclj f r him. U3U digih the tire is unknown, and as nothing spas insured, Mr. Mellon may bo taki ket bi ell.
