CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the above Council was held on Tuesday evening last at the Council Chambers. Present, J. U. Cambridge, Es<p, Mayor, and Councillors Naylor, Feraud, Auckland and Hazlett.
The Town Clerk read the report received from Mr. I). 1.. Simpson, with respect to the erection of a bridge across the Molyiicux, as follows:
“ As requested per telegram, I made an examination on the 4th instant of the Clutha Kiver banks At Clyde, and instituted the necessary surveys for the purpose of affording the Town Council information as to the most-desirable site.for a bridge, with an estimate of the cost of construction, and I now give you my opinion after carcfu'ly considering the matter. “ The site pointed out by the Members of Council on the morning of my examination is certainly the most eligible one. The span will not exceed two hundred feet, and the reef on either sid-e is solid, and admira. bly adapted for., foumlationlpu: poses. No other site posscsing anything like the same advantages, I confined my detailed survey and section exclusively to it. ■-. * “The river was considerably above its ordinary level during my visit, hut it did not prevent mo from acquiring all nece.s.uy information.
“ The annexed tracing exhibits the position of the Bridge site relatively to the Town.
“ The Bridge I recommend would bo on the wire suspension principle. The cost of a structure of this kind, capable of carrying ordinal y road traffic-is much less than that of any other, besides combining lightness with strength and durability. . “ The span between piers is not more than two hundred feet, and the distance from anchorage to anchorage need not exceed two hundred and seventy five feet.
“ The Tiers would of course consist of masonry built in cement, stone for which can be cheaply quarried on the ground. The roadway, fifteen fett clear in width would be suspended in the ordinary way by vertical rods. • Thu height above flood level is assumed to be ten fret, allowing therefore for a central deflection of about fifteen feet ; the summit of piers would not exceed thirty feet above flood level. “ Guided by the above data, I estimate the cost of the bridge at 4,30iV. Of course this does not include the cost of forming the approaches, which may probably amount to, but certainly should not exceed 500'. ” I am, &c., “ I). L. SIMPSON.” Proposed Cr. Fcraud, seconded by Cr. Auckland, That the report be received, and that a cheque for 25’. be forwarded to Mr. Simpson. Carried.
I’roposed by Cr., Hazlotfc, seconded by C'r. Auckland, That a committo bo ap•pointed, consisting of the Mayor, and Crs. Naylor, Feraud, and the mover, to make all the necessary arrangements, and to confer with the Government relative to the subsidy for constructing the said bridge at the point proposed in Mr. Simpson's
report. A letter was read by tho Town Clerk from the Provincial Secretary, asking for what sum the Council would bo willing to undertake the making of the main road through the Municipality according to tho 4th clause of tho Local Revenues Ordinance, 1572. It was decided that it be replied to, stating that the Council was not in a position to give an opinion as to tho probable coat, on account of the gravelly nature of the ground, unless they had the assistance of an engineer, they therefore asked that the Government get it surveyed and an estimate of the coat prepared, after which the Council would take the matter into consideration and would, no doubt, undertake it for a reasonable amount.
The attention of the Mayor was called to the. fact that a building was in the course of erection encroaching on the roadway of the back street, West ward. It was ordered that no >ouc should be allowed to build on the roadway, and that the Town Clerk give notice to that effect. A vote of thanks to the Mayor concluded the meeting.
