The Inangahua Herald relates Cne following:—lt will be within the recollection of our readers that a man known as','Geriuas Jerry recently absconded from the employ of a storekeeper named Brandt, at the Landing, with about 80/, in cash and gold. A warrant was out for his arrest, and informatinn l.aving'been nseeitninedof his whereabouts, he was arrested bv Constable ChicChester at 4a. m. on Thurs lay, ab >ut two miles above the Lyell in a hut situated Health; Bullt-r river. Having, to cross the'■ river ina small boat the prisoner asked that the handcuffs might be reraiiVeitZitt'd this was done. Constable ChicliQ3te-,. the arresting officer pursue! the prismor"along the river bank, but the latter invariably dived on p'.rcetviag him, a:ul the constable last saw the absconder at the head of 'the faH when he dived, an 1 through Constable Chichester had a full view of %a river for 120 yards ho saw no more of the fugitive. The constable searched the bank of the river but could find no trace of him nor any sign of his having emerged from th° river. Cbicchester is certain that the run-away could not have, survived the passage of the fall.
