CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chamber on Wednesday evening last, the 20th inst. Present: J. TJ. Cambridge, Esq., Mayor, and Councillors Hazlett, Patterson, Auck: land, and Marshall. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The inward correspondence consisting of the following letters From the Provincial Secretary, acknowledging receipt of memorial in favor of the Waipahi Line, and stating that the same xvould be forwarded to the proper quarter: from the same, directing attention to the collection of license fees under the Revenues Ordinance; from his Honor the Superintendent, to the effect that the services of the District Surveyor could not be granted to report on the proposed bridge across the Molyneux at Clyde, as it would interfere with his duties ; from the Cromwell Town Council, declining to co-operate with the Clyde Council in memorialising in favor of the Waipahi Line of Railway ; from Mr. C. Nicolson. of Ettrick, suggesting that a Committee should he appointed to systematically agitate in favor of the Waipahi Line; and three others, were read and received. The outward Correspondence was read and adopted. »< In considering the letter from his Honor the Superintendent, regret was expreseed that the services of Mr. Blows, District Engineer, could not be granted to report on the proposed bridge. After some discussion it was decided to let the matter stand over till next meeting, when it was hoped Cr. Feraud, who had initiated the matter, would be in attendance. The Town Clerk w r as instructed to write to Mr. 0. Nicolson, Ettrick, expressing the willingness of the Council to j.,ia with his district in agitating for the coast-ruction of the lino of railway from Clinton to Ettrick. The Town Clerk was instructed to advertise in the Damlm Times a notice regarding the payment of license fees to the Council, under the Revenue Ordinance. Permission was given to the Clyde Brass Band to use the Towu'Hall for a rehearsal. The request of the Clyde Church of England Committee to use the Town Hall for holding Divine Service during the summer mouths was granted. Accounts to the amount of 71. 7s. 7d. were passed for payment. The Town Clerk was instructed to wait upon Mr. W. W. Wilson, solicitor, and ask him to furnish date and items in his bill of costs. The assessment roll was laid on the table. Great dissatisfaction was expressed at the assessment, Councillor Patterson averring that no trouble could have been taken in its compilation, as it was merely a copy of last year’s assessment. Cr. Hazlett thought the system adopted of appointing Assessors was wrong. The Assessors should be. selected from among the Council, who would take a greater interest in the work. He hoped that some different system would bo adopted in the future. Cr. Hazlett suggested that a water-rate should be levied. He said, by no special rate being demanded for the use of water flowing through the town, which had cost and was still costing a good deal of money, there were people reaping an undue advantage over others, and, to prevent this, he offered the suggestion. The power of the Council to levy a special water-rate was freely discussed, and after a somewhat lenghthy conversation, the subject dropped. The Town Clerk was instructed to provide the Council with the Water-works Act, and lay the same on the table at the next meeting. The meeting terminated with the usual vote of thanks.
