BLACK'S

(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) November 12. Our summer is now fairly set in, the weather of late having been extremely hot. The people of Black’s are extremely rejoiced at the return of Mr. Carew-. The Government should now appoint him Registrar, &c., for tile district, the want of such an officer is sadly ffilt here. Our R. M. Court was well attended to day, and must have been a source of considerable revenue to the Government—how much more so woidd it bo if the township were sold. Our gold returns by the last escort were over 1,000 ounces. O’Brien and Co’s dramatic troupe gave entertainments on Friday and Saturday evenings last, which were well attended and highly approved of by the public, the general opinion being that they are the best that ever visited Blacks, and, should they ever pay us another visit, will be well received.

Mr. Hislop, the Inspector of Schools, paid us a visit on Friday last and examined the children—there were but seventeen present I am sorry to say, (two of whom Miss Dundas and Master James Potter)did groat credit tojtlieir teacher, the remainder diil not do so well, which is to he attributed to i.ot being regular attendants at the School, which is much to he deplored. I am g’ad to say that the raining community are doing pretty well, the majority of whom are making wages cnl seem contented. Tne Chinese muster strong, and from what I heir must be doing very well likewise.

The farmers look forward to having good crops, but 1 fear that if we do not have rain shortly, their hopes will be blighted. In conclusion I have much pleasure in stating that business of late lias very much improved, in fact, better than it lias been for many mouths past.
