: | The usual fortnightly meeting of the : Council avas held iirgdie Council Chambers on Wednesday evening last, tbe 23rd inst. Present: —J. U. Cambridge, Esq., Mayor, and Councillors Hazlett, Marshall, Auckland and Patterson The minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed. The Inward and Outward correspondence was read, received, and adopted. It was resolved that a dozen of the Municipal Ordinances as printed by authority of the Dunedin Council be purchased. The following accounts were passed for payment :—K. Moore, bellringiug, &c.. If. 2a. 6J. ; A. Waddell, blacksmith’s work, 21. Is. 6d. ; J. Hazlett, kerosene, &c., If. 2s. 6d. ; J. Patterson, street cleaning, 9f. 17a. Cd. The Town Clerk read, resolutions passed at a public meeting (held on Monday evening last), calling upon the Council to take some action relative to Waipabi Line of Railroad. The Mayor said he had written to Mr. T. L. Shepherd, M.Et.R., enclosing a copy of the resolutions. Some discussion ensued as to what course it would be most desirable to take, the Mayor suggesting that the Councils of Cromwell and Alexandra, also the other centres of population in the district, bo asked to co-operate with the Clyde Council in memorialising the Government to causo the survey of the proposed line to be made. Cr. Hazlett would be most happy to support the suggestion, and proposed, That this Council invite the co-operation of tho Councils of Alexandra and Cromwell, also the centres of population in the district and along the course of the proposed lino of railway, as reported on hy Mr. J. Millar, F.S.A., C.E., and called the “ Otago Grand Central Trunk Railway,” in urging on the Government to have the same constructed as far as Ettrick and Teviot. Seconded by Cr. Marshall, and carried. Proposed by Cr. Patterson, seconded by Cr. Auckland, and carried, That the Council take immediate action, in accordance with the resolutions passed at the late public meeting, and memorialise the Government to have tho Waipahi Line of Railway constructed ; and that a sum not exceeding lOf bo expended in obtaining signatures to the same. The Mayor said the next matter to deal j with was the resolution carried at the last I meeting of the Council, empowering him to | obtain information respecting the estimated ! cost of a bridge acoss the Molyncux at j Clyde, and explained that he had not taken | any action in the matter as ye?. Cr. Hazlett spoke at some length regard- j ing the bridge that is being constructed across the llawarr.ii, he said the Govern- j went were acquainted with all tho particu- ; lars of th it structure,- and he thought tho readiest way »f obtaining tho probable cost of a bridge at Clyde, would be to write to his Honor the Superintendent, to request Mr. Bows, the district engineer, to report to this Council on the same. A resolution to that effect was adopted. The Public Works Committee were instructed to have tho fire bell erected. | Cr. Patterson asked if the Assessors had ! sent in their report. The Town Clerk raid they had not done so. i Resolved, That the Town Clerk be ! instructed to write to tbe Assessors, in- : forming them that if their report was not j sent in to the Council by Monday? next, other Assessors would be appointed to do thework. A vote of thanks to the Chair concluded the meeting.
