ALBERT TOWN RACES.

: Friday & Saturday, 18th & 19th of Oct. Judge, Mr. I. Loughnau ; Starter, Mr. ! G. B. Bond ; Clerk of the Course, Mrli F. ' Willmott; Stewards, Messrs. 11. Campbell, : IT. S. Thomson, A. Fraser. T. Russell, H. ■ Norman, G. B. Bond, J. M'Grath, and Graham.. FIRST DAY. The liberal programme issued by the stewards, had set the racing community and pleasure seekers quite on the (jui vive, and never since the first meeting on the Albert-town course has there been so large and animated an assemblage gathered together. The weather was Queens weather, and old and young, from far and pear by their presence, countenanced the proceedings. Of the fair sex there was a good sprinkling, and by their presence gave a softening tone to what, in the eyes of many, is but a questionable pastime, A race course if stripped of the many objectionable adjucts that invariably do congregate there, ; s a desirable, and at the same time, pleasurable aroma. And such was the Albcrt-town course during -the late meeting, and we feel quite assured that all thoroughly enjoyed themselves, nnd that none experienced a qualm of conscience at being present. We estimate the number on the course to have been fully two hundred, including representatives of every class, and from every town and settlement within a radius of some forty’ miles. The snort was commeac id with a private match between the renowned Merrythought, the property of Mr. Hodgson, of Cardtona, and Mr. M ‘Kay’s Saladin, for 2 01. a side, resulting in an easy victory for the local horse, to the no small chargin of the owner of Saladin and his backers and to the intense satisfaction of the local residents. A second private matcli took place during the meeting- between another Oardrot.a nag, KaKnaud a district horse, Glcnwheny, resulting again in the local horse being declared victorious. Of the rest of the programme, with but one exception, all the events were keen’y contested, the performances being appended below. On the evening of the first day of the races, through the kindness ofjMr. H. Campbell, who placed at the disposal of Mr. O.Bricn and his troupe, his spacious woolshed, a large number outsat an entertainment of some three hours duration, and by the hearty expressions of approval given after each dialogue, song, or dance, all were satisfied. The company consisted of Mr. O’Brien, Miss Jessie Raymond, nee Airs. Glover, Mr. Glover, no mean performers of the parts allotted them. Miss Raymond’s pourtrayal of the character Maggie M ‘Farlane in Caller Herrin, was a treat, as was also Mr. O’Brien’s “ Irish personifications, j “Murphy, your sowl stbiek up,” was adI mirably done, and perfectly convulsed the I audience. | The result of thoraces arc as follows. : MAIDEN PLATE of 15 rovs. Distance, i one mile. Weight forage. Mr. M'Calhim’s br.g. Governor, 6 yes, j 10s, 11b. (Caldwell) 1 CampbeU’s blk.g. Jasper, 3 yrs. Sst 13’b (J, M‘Guirc) 2 Hill’s b.g. Unknown, 6 yrs. lOst.llb (Smith,} 3 Tuhey’s b.m. Etty Morris, 4- yrs 9st 10!b (Fraser) 0 This was a most excellent race. Mr. Bond effected a good start, they getting away well together. Governor and Etty Morris gradually took to the fore, and were well in advance for the first half mile, when Jasper and Unknown challenged the mare, and gave her the goodbye, making the running somewhat warm for Governor, who still kept the lead, the little horse however, was a match for them, an d was landed the winner, with Jasptr second. Unknown third Fawn refused at Jtho start and was nowhere. Time 2 min, PUBLICAN’S PURSE of 10 sovs. Thre# quarter mile heats. No weight under 10st. Mr. Hodgson’s b. g. At about the half. Merrythought put on a spurt, gradually gained on' his opponent, passed him within one hundred yards of home, and won easily. The second heat was similar to the first, with the exception that the contest lay between the two bays, the chestnut mare not starting. Grant’s Comet was entered, but a protest was lodged against his running, on the ground of some irregn arity at last year’s meeting. The Stewards upheld the protest, and further disqualifying the horse from ever running on the Albert Town course. ALBERTOWN HANDICAP of 30 sovs. Distance, two miles. Gpen to all horses. Catch Weights. Mr. Hill’s b.g. Unknown 1 Limbrick’s ch.g. Roderick 2 Shanley’s b.g. Fenian 3 Swan’s ch.g. Sunbeam, (Swan) 3 The cup of pleasure that was expected over this event, was ruthlessly dashed away, on the fall of the flag by Fawn cannoning against Sunbeam and the two bolting, allowing Jasper to leisurely canter over the course homo. SHORTS of 5 sovs. Half Mi'e Heats, with- ' out dismounting. Catch Weights, Mr. M‘Callurn’s Governor, (Al'Guire) 10 1 Shanley’s b.g. Fenian, (Swan) 212 Hudson’s Merrythought, (Holt) 3 2 Mill’s b.g.
