DEATH OF AN OLD NEW ZEALAND GENERAL.
Major-General George Jackson Carey. C B„ commanding the Northeni District, died on June 13, at Whalldy Range, Manchester He entered the service July, 1815; became Lieutenant, April 1857} ' aptain, October, 1848; Major, January, "1853; Lieutenant. Colonel, May, 1853; Colonel, November, 1854; and Major-General, January, 1868. He served in the Cape mounted Riflemen throughout the Kaflflr wars of 1846-47 (horse wounded) and 1850-52—slightly wounded horse killed; (medal and brevet of Lieu-tenant-Colonel). Served as Military Secretary to Sir James Jackson, when commanding the farces at the Cape of Good Hope. Served in the New Zealand campaign from August 1863 to August 1865 as Colonel on the Staff and brigadier-general. Commanded the expedition on the East Coast to the Thames and to Tauranga. Commanded the troops in action at the siege and capture of the enemy’s strong-hold of Orakau, which fell nfter three days' continued operations. (C.8.) On May 27,1865, the great Chief and king maker, Wiliam Thompson, surrendered to Brigadier-General Carey, laying his tacka at his feet in token of submission to Her Majesty. In August, 1885, was appointed to the command of the troops in t. ustrralia (medal for New Zealand); and on december I, 1867, to the command of one of the Infantry Brigades at Aldershot, whence he was transferred in October last to the command of the Northern Military District European Mail
