PRSIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT, CLYDE.
Friday, Sgpr. 13. (Before E. 11. Carew, Esq., R.M.) William Duffy was brought up m remand charged on suspicion of having set fire to the building occupied by his wife. The Police applied for a further remand till Saturday, which was granted. Saturday Sept. 14s hj. William Duffy, on remand, was brought up. {The Police sai l they were now prepared to go on with the case. , The whole of the Witness examined at the inquest were re-examined but nothing further was estimated. (We refer our reader t > the report of the inquest which appears in another column,) James Patterson, sworn, said: I am a hotelkeeper, rssidin • in Sunderland-street, Clyde. Know the accuse 1 for the .as 1 - 4or 5 years. On Saturday night the 7 hj in-t., accused came into my house about 11 o’clock and ha 12 glass sof beer. Accused had drink before, but was not much the worse of liquor Tii re was some conversation about Mis Duffy, accused saying if he got hold of her he would give her a squ eze. lie did not appear to be a igvy , On previous occasions, when the accuse 1 has been the worse of liquor have heard him u<e threats toward Mrs Duffy. Have known Mrs. Duffy come to my house at night, with on’y hernuht divas and a shawl on, an! ask f radmittaneo, saying she was afraid af accused molesting her On the Morning of toe B‘h, about 2 o’clock, I heard an alarm of fire. I was then in lied, t went out ido and saw Mrs. Daffy, running in the direction of the fire, sere mmg “tire.’' There is only one building that of Dr. Thomson betwe n my hotel and the house damaged by fire. .Mr:-. Deify told me afterwards tha accused had come to the hack door of her house and demanded admission; that she refused him an 1 that accused went to the front door and burst it open. She then went out of the hack door, jnnv ed over the wad into Dr - Thomson's garden, and again over the other wall into my house, and after knocking at my bedroom door wen" into the bedroom occupied by one of my children aud laid down and that in about 5 minutes she heard the alarm of fiie. When I saw her she had only her night dress on. The Bench, after giving the usual caution the accused saying lie hrdfnothingito say.
