SPORTING NEWS.

(From an old Bird.) Active preparations are already being made for the forthcoming Spring meeting, which promises to be the most successful ever held at the Dunstan. The Club have given out a very liberal Programme, upwards of ninety pounds, public money, having been subscribed. The Programmes jjave been th roughly distributed in the outlying districts, and I .must refer my readers to their perusal for the different races. There is every probability of Clyde being well represented, as several horses are already put into-work. That plucky sportsman, Mr. James Hazlett, who always has something to keep the game alive, is coming out with the old veteran, Atlas, who has had a long turn on the grass,'since meeting with his misfortune at Tokomairiro, and I wish the old horse every success, as like iris owner, he is a right-un. The stable companion of Atlas is that game little mare, Brunette, whose victories last annual meeting, will doubtless be quite fresh in the memory of my sporting friendsThey are both under the careful tuition of Stewart Waddell, who no doubt will do bis best to make them profitable to their owner. Next in notation <eomes a very pretty little four-year-old Scud colt, the property of Mr. Thomas Hawthorne, of the Clyde Hotel, which is not exactly my sort, though you never can tell, they go in all shapes, yet under his skillful trainer, Billy Woodman, and steered by the redoubtable Stanbronk, junior, ho may give a good account of himself yet, but I would advise them tofceep the Knife off his tail, with which they have already made a little too free. J4r. John Cox, who has been lying back the days of Harkaway, is now coming out with a line colt, by Eoeouck, dam, Polly Leek, which I think will do credit to his handsome little Sire, and 1 must say, for so green a colt, he promises to be one of the finest goers ever stripped on the Dunstau course, and should his owner have tbs goo i fortun • to bring him to the post anything like fit, ami steered by a decent hul, he will take a deal of shaking off. I have saen Laing out with a very neat little horse, but 1 know not from whence be came, I like bis appearance, and be looks like a goer, but as yet has done vary little work, so that 1 have not had a chance of seeing him move beyond a walk. f think Alexandra will be represented by Mr. Beresford’s mare, Cressidor, who won the Maiden Plate here two years ago. There may be another or two from there, but I shall be able to give you a more detailed account shortly, as I sball roost very near the course, and take a Bird’s eye view of all that goes in that direction.
