The Government Land sales arc proclaimed to take place as follows Roxburgh and Ettrick, on Monday, the 19th inst. Alexandra, Tuesday, 20th inst. ; Clyde, Wednesday, 2lst inst.; Cromwell, Thursday 22nd inst. ; Bendigo. Gladstone, Newcastle, and Pembroke rn Friday, the 23rd inst. and Black’s on Monday, the 2oth inst. Mr. Sledeberg has at length got everything in full working o"der with his new steam dredge, and expects being at work in the course of to-day. Mr. Peideberg has had to contend against difficulties, to overcome which not only patience and ingenuity has been displayed, but the expenditure of a very largo sum of money has been incurve 1 The use of sfeun as a motive power to work the M dyueux dredges has never as yet been tried, consequently every ingenious little contrivance is new in itself, and having no example to follow, no smab difficulty was experienced in conned* ing the diffierent parts of the machinery with the main engine. From the circumscribed limits of the barge or punt carrying the machinery, space his had io be economised, and the motive machinery though working under one hoi cr, comprises two two-horse power engines to which the dredging apparatus is affixed, and one engine of the same power to work the pump, which docs the double duty of supplying the boile’- and raising water to sluice tne dirt as brought up by the spoon. The appearance of the dredge ready for active operations is compact, and the very perfection of neatness combined with durability, and little doubt is expressed at it answering every expectation and being a decided sueeess. The ground she is intended to com nonce on is immediately opposite Clyde, and reputed to be exceedingly rich in the precious metal. A man named Donald Cameron, in the employ of Mr. Adam M'Leod, the well know carrier was admitted into the hospital on Thursday week suffering from a compound factine of the leg. The accident Occurred at Cromwell, whilst harnessing up his team. This is the second time Cameron has had the same leg broken. From the report of the Meeting of shareholders of the Garrick Range Water supply Company we learn that 1795 shares have already been taken up,* nothing is said as to how much of the race is cut or when it is likely to be finished Winter has again come upon us in all its fury, bringing with it a fall of snow equal to any that has yet preceded it. On the highlands the fall was considerably greater, and those neighborhoods that up to the present were accessible are now cut off from us by the blockade. The continuance for so long a time of such severe weather is exceedingly unpleasant and inconvenient for Ihe time being yet it will eventually benefit the country greatly, as the miners will have a full and steady supply of water during the summer. The roads are rendered all but impassable, as is evidenced by the fact that the I) nedin coach via Palmerston takes four days instead of two to accomplish the journey, and the same via Tuapeka. ’ - ! Mr. Chappie notifies that the postponed sale of the Kearsage dredge and claim will take place on Saturday ovenin j, th 17th inst, at 7 p.m., at the- Cnierioa Hotel, Alexandra,

Whe Mr. Trollope.publishes his experiences of ‘Otago life,' and ‘Ways and Customs of th> Otagoites,” from its extreme truthfulnes? - we should imagine it will command a ready sale. Mr. William Smitham, was entertained at a banquet at theKawarauHpte.l Cromwell on the evening of the Bth instant previous to his departure from the district, which was attended by the majority of tin Town, j, - * i . There are three Candidate for the vacant seat in the Provincial. Council for Caversham Messrs. Stout, Fish and Leary, It is considered that the contest will he ..between Messrs. Stout and Fish. A meeting of the members of the Dun stan Jockey, Club is cal'ed for Wednes la' “Evening next, at Cox’s Port Phillip Hotel for the purpose of fixing date of Spring Meeting &c,,—See Advertisement. The usual meeting of the Town Council to have beanheld on Wednesday Evening last lapsed for want of a quorum From good authority we learn that the lode of Mineral discovered at the Garrick Range and noticed in our last issue, is antimony. At the present time with the appliances at command, and the many difficulties to be overcome iu working a lode of the descriptions we understand it will not-pay to work. After a rather personal debate in the Conn oil, the salary of the Mayor of Dunedin, was fixed at 300/, per annum. From a Daily Times telegram wo learn that, during a debate in the House of Representatives, on ♦lnsular Separation, Mr. Fox on being asked the views of the Government on the subject, refused to commit the Ministry to any opinion until the resolution was more fully explained, and Raid Mr. Stafford would have acted in the same way if he had been at the head of the Goverment. At this Mr. Stafford rose and said he felt humiliated at the position the Government occupied in refusing to lead the house and waiting to see how the tide went “He would not have, done so.” The House expected the Government to lead, and not to see a lot of miserable wretches sitting on the Government benches waiting to he dictated to by the House and afraid to lead it. At a later period of the evening Mr Stafford expressed his regret that, in the heat of his indignation he had used such words, and he withdrew and handsomely ap ili g »,ud fur thorn. The Salary of the 'Mayor.of Dunedin at a late Meeting of Council after .considerable discussion was reduced by 100/, to 300/, per annum. The following resolutions were adopted at a la e Meeting of the Arrow Miners association. : “That this Committee is of opinion that (while acknowledging the immense benefits which lia e resulted to the district from the working of the Agricultural Lea e Regulations) the time has drived whfn.it is desirable in the interests of the minora that any further alienation of land for agricultural purposes should be suspended in this district; and that, in cases where the lands already leased have been proved to ' o payably auriferous, the purchase of the freehold by the lessee should not be permitted—with a view to the future determ'na(ion of such leases by the Governor as the present rapid development of the gold workings may d emand.—“That having in view rho acknowledged inability of the Provincial Government to carry out public works without selling large blocks of land—principally on Go.dfields-snch as that so d to Clarke, of SO square mile?; or the proposed sale to Cargill and Anderson of about 30 square miles, this Committee are of opinion that the entire control of the Goldfields of Otago “hould be vested in the General Government.” The Mt, Ida Chronicle says the roads are so bad in the neighbourhood of the Houndburn Hill that the surface men repair them with long handled shovels on horseback. Mt Ida is going in strong for a Municipality, a canvass is being made for signatures to the Memorial. DUNSTAN BAND OF HOPE. The Fifth Entertainment under the auspio-s of the above Association took place on Wednesday evening last, in the Townhall, Clyde, and was admitted on all sides to have b en tbeir greatest success. ) A marked improvement was perceptible in the singing by the class, and great credit is due to their instructor for the perfection they have attained. The pieces were not only well rendered, hut admiralty selected, and the infusion of new blood helped to relieve the entertainment of anything approaching sameness, and tended to give a zesi to the whole affair we have not before experienced. The Rev. Joshua Jones, who occupied the chair, opened the proceedings by an address, followed by an overture on the piano and clarionet-, by Messrs- Harvey and MTntosh, which proved a great heat, the clarionet being played in a most masterly manner. Songs, glees, recitations, and readings succeeded, each performer evidently doing his best to merit the applause wh'ch was unsparingly awarded. During tic evening Mr. MTntosh played several excellent and diffioul. pieces of music in a manner seldom to be heard in a provincial town. The entertainment having been brought to a close, the room was cleared, and to the strains of the pianoforte and violin, a select party of about fifty tripped it right merrily, . and apparently thoroughly enjoyed themi selves. Gatherings of this class deserve the countenance of all. Those whose forie does j no. lie in contributing to the entertainment should attend as one of the audience, and thus assist in their success. From a social point of view they do au imm nsity of good. Thev not only attract visitors trom all parts of the district, but produce au in'- - bang" of good fellowship and good feeling.
