MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

’ CLYDE, On Thursday the Ist instant, the Muni. } cipal Elections were brought to a close bj I the election of Councillors to fill the vacant ' seats through retirement by rotation, re- ’ suiting in the importing of new blood into the Council. Each seat was' contested with vigor hy all the Candidates, and from the opening to the closing of the poll, the vicinity of the booths presented quite an animated appearance. Che result as given below will he sufficient evidence that the Municipal Institution is valued, and we hope it will fall to our duty at the termination of the year’s labors, not only to congratulate the elector's on their choice, but also to chronicle that the promises made to advance the interests of the Town have been fulfilled, The Council formed, comprises gentlemen of intelligence and energy, and there is but small doubt that, if unanimity pervades their meetings, great good will result from'their deliberations. The small preliminary works have all been encompassed, and everything is favorable to the Council initiating, anti even carrying out during their term of office, works of such magnitude and importance, as will give the Town that prominence, its [position (entitles it to occupy. The result of the poll of the day's election is as follows : East Ward. Jean Desire Feraud ... 14 George Clark ... ... 9 West WaKD. William Auckland ... ]4 Samuel Welsford 13 The Returning Officer declared Mr. J, D. Feraud and Air. William Auckland duly elected. Air. Feraud came forward and said: Gentlemen, In thanking you for returning me as representative in the Council for the East Ward, allow me to say I feel the extremest satisfaction at this recognition of your confluence, and have but to say that I will cudeavor, by my advocacy for the general weal and prosperity of the town, to merit it, In seeking the position Fsoarcely dared think of being returned,J as 1 deemed the antagonism that,hitherto existed between us would preclude it; but, as you have buried the hatchet, 1 will say, let the past bo forgotten. The Council, if unanimous, can work great good for Clyde and the district, and I have no doubt but that a good strong pull all together will, despite all croaking, firmly establish Clyde ns the leading town of the Northern Gold-fields. Reiterating again my determination to advocate the best interests of the town and district, I again thank you. Air. Auckland said :. Gentlemen,—l have to thank you for placing me at the top of the poll, and trust you will have no necessity dining my term of office to regret your action of to-day. The large stake I have in the town should he guarantee sufficient that my attention will be given in the direction of advancement. Aly motto shall be “Progress-” Again, gentlemen, I thank yon. Messrs. Welsford and Clark briefly returned thanks to those gentlemen who had supported them. A x ote of thanks having been passed to the Returning Officer, the proceedings terminated. The Council fer the Jlnnicipal year 1872-3 is constituted as follows : Mayor John UffiirCambridgo, East Ward. . Anthony Brough Martin Alarshall East Ward. Benjamin Naylor Jean D. Feraud West Ward. James Patterson Wiiliam Auckland. ALEXANDRA. There was no contest either for holding flic Mayorship or representing either Ward as Councillor. Air. W. Boroscord was elected Alayor, without opposition, and Alessrs. Al‘Donald and Martin as Councillors in a similar manner. CROMWELL. The contest for the Mayoralty was keen, resulting in the return of Air. AI. Fraer over Ids opponent, the late occupant of the office. There weae three'vacancies in the Council. Alessrs. Brown and Dawkins were returned 'without opposition ; but for the third seat there was a somewhat sharp contest, and Mr. William Grant was elected by a majority of sixteen over his opponent Air.
