Beneath tlic Buie of Men entirely just the pen is mightier than the sword
Although disastrous to I he miners engaged in the vicinity of the river banks, the late rains have operated as a rule highly beneficial to the mining interests. The ground which a short time since was bound in iron bonds, is now assailable to the pick or hydraulic hose, and in places where no water existed, or the snpyly was short, there is an abundance. Prom all parts of the Province this appears to be the case, and one round of prosperity promises to attend the efforts of the miner in his endeavors to extract the go'd from mother earth. In the case of the farmer, like beneficial effects are experienced, the ground is well saturated with moisture, and the plough is doing its work almost a month earlier than usual —with such a favorable seed time, there is every promise of an abundant harvest, and we hope to experience nb short supplies this season, nor to be under the necessity of importing produce from ■ other districts, which we should produce ourselves, The Dunstan has teen a considerable loser of late by
Laving to import so many necessaries, which should have been grown at home, and to this reason must, in a great measure, be attributed the present commercial depression, not that ou" population are by any means less consumers, but that they have not the money to expend upon many articles which they require, for reasons of its scarcity. It matters not how much gold we may obtain, if it al] goes away to supply the means of getting it, weave equally as well off, let the quantity be little or much. To the business man, this is a most im portant matter, and no stone should be left unturned to make the district self supporting as regards its farm produce, leaving out the advantage of the extra amount of labor to be employed. The approaching spring bids promise of better times, all interests alike partaking of the beneficient change, and we can o ly hope that nature’s bounty will be turned to good and profitable account.
