CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.

A Special Meeting of tha Council, con veiled bv eiieuiitr, was held in the Council Chambers on, Wednesday evening, the 17th hist.' Present ■ James Hazlett, Esq., J.P., Mayor, anil Councillors Brough, Clark, Pattersoiiy- Naylor, Welsford, and Hastie. ' ' The' Mayor stated the object of the meeting namely,' ;tb appoint Presiding Officers 'at the election of Mayor, and to consider a letter received from the Provincial Secretary. The following Councillors were,appointed to preside at the ensuing election of Mayor: —Councillor Welsford, South Ward ; Councillor Clark, East Ward ; and Councillor Patterson, West Ward, The Town Clerk read a letter from the Provincial Secretary, as follows ‘ ‘ Provincial Secretary's Office, Dunedin,- July 13, 1872. “Sir, —You are no doubt aware that an Ordinance has been passed by the Provincial Council, vesting in the Corporations of the respective Municipalities in the Province the license fees an I dog-tax accruing therein, on condition that, they undertake the management and maintenance of the man road within their respective boundaries. “The Ordinance has not yet received the official sanction of his Excellency the Governor ; but I do not think it probable he wi'd be advised to withhold his assent to so desirable and equitable a measure “In the event, however, of the Ordinance being disallowed, the Provincial Council has voted, under the head of Municipalities, a sura which is estimated to be sufficient to repay the amount of license fees, &c., collected in each Municipality. “ My object in now addressing you is to request that you will be good enough to advise me whether the Corporation of Clyde, will be prepared to take over the maintenance of the main road within the Municipality, as from the first day of August proximo, receiving from the Provincial Treasury the license fees and dog-tax which will be collected in the Municipality from the 3st of April, 1872, to the 31st of March, 1873, less any sums of money expended by the Government in maintenance of roads therein since the Ist of April last up to the date of transfer. “In the event of your concurrence to this arrangement, instructions wdl be issued at once to the above effect. I have the honor, kc., “D. Beid." Proposed by Councillor Brough, That the Town Clerk be instructed to reply forthwith to the letter addressed to the Corporation hy the Provincial Secretary, agreeing to undertake the maintenance of the roads already formed within the Municipal iboundary on the terms mentioned in his letter, it being understood that all main roads are to. be formed at the expense of the Government, and the Council only to have to maintain such roads when formed. Seconded by Councillor Clark, and carried. The usual vote of thanks terminated the proceedings.
