One of the armed constabulary in attendance on Mr. Kayo at Somes’ Island has been attacked with smallpox. Kaye is now convalescent. Proposals have been mooted for the construction of a railway : from Greymouth through Reefton district, to connect with the Canterbury Great Northern Line. Mr. Caruthers officially' estimates the traffic on the Hutt line, on the basis of the present traffic, at 5,7507. per annum ; working expenses, including renewals, 5,5001. per annum. Auckland, July 2. Barry and Nolan, the prospectors sent out by the Provincial Government, at the request of the Maoris, to prospect Tuhua district, are on their way'hack’to Auckland. Nothing is _knowu regarding their proceedings. An Orange procession having been organised to take place at the Thames on the 12th inst-, a deputation waited upon his Honor the Superintendent, and asked him not to allow it to come off. The Wellington solicitors for the Colonists Aid Corporation have received advices that the [first hatch of immigrants under the scheme will shortly he despatched for tho Colony. The Government will introduce a Consolidated Gold-fields Act during the coming Session. Auckland. July 3. A case of small-pox sent to the Hospital from the lodging.house where Thompson was staying when seized with the disease. Messrs. Barry and Nolan, the Tuhua prospecsors, say they were encouraged by the natives, hut were interrupted by Pakeka, Maoris following them about, so that they were obliged to return. They will go out prospecting again next spring. Napier, July 3. Eriherg, who was sent to Scaudanavia as Immigration Agent, is returning, on account of the Swedish Government requiring a deposit of 5,0007., to he forfeited in case the hopes held out to emigrants are not fulfilled. It is believed the effect of this will put an end to Scandinavian immigration. Hokitika July 3. Ridley, formerly manager to Kortegust, the brewer, was accidentally killed at the Hau Hau Tramway—his horse bolted down a cutting, and fell, rolling over him. John Ward, carpenter, has been committed for trial for perjury, and the hill allowed. Dunedin. The yield of gold for the half year has increased 18,000 ounces, the principal increases being from Queenstowu, 1,670, Arrow, 3,905 ) Cromwell, 3.275 ; Tuapeka, 3,526; Woolshed, 1,900. The Dunstan, Manuherikia, Mount Ida, and Switzers show a decrease in the Escort of 9,996 ounces.
