On tho 4th ultimo, a man named John Ccuu, was hanged in the Bathurst gaol for the murder of an elderly woman named Aveline Little:—With reference to this report, the Sydney Morning Herald remarks: _ ■ < The newspaper accounts of the execution of Conn states that his head and body were forked asunder, and that the head alone remained swinging in the rope. The official certificate of execution in the Government Gazette declares that he was ‘ hanged by the neck until his bodylwas dead.’ ” Asgles, in the Australasian, says : —“On Tuesday morning, a visitor to the office of a gentleman who follows the lawful pursuit of lending money at interest, was present when tho following exchange of,compliments passed between the money dealer and his youthful clerk Capitalist,—“ Madethataccountoutyet?” Clerk.—“ All right, sir.’’ Capitalist. —“ Reckoned up the interest?” Clerk. —“ Yes sir. Checked it over,twice; just the 280 per cent.” Capitalist.—“ Confound you! Haven’t I told you twenty times never to repeat that —above your breath. A new theatre is being erected on the old Varieties -ate in Burke St., which is expected, when completed, will'hot be only a credit to the City, hut will be replete as to the comfort of the public. gf-At a meeting’of the; Persian Relief Fund, held recently, the treasurer announced that the subsmptioiis;rcccived to date amounted to the sura ofjlOSf. Messrs. Richard Gibson, & Co., sold to Mr. W. Robertson, of Colac, on the 6th ultimo, a bull belonging to] Mr. Richard Morton, for the large sum of 'BOOI. This price, s.vs flit Australasian, is Gas highest price ever given for any single animal in tho Australian ooloriies. The police stationed on’ Emerald-hill on the 11th ultimo, received information that a man had committed suicide by hatging himself ou'.tlieffag-staff m the Sk Vincent public gardens. A constable at once made his way in hot haste, only to find that the supposed suicide was a dummy placed there over night by some practical jokers. It is said that just abont dawn a constable saw what lie believed to be a sailor performing some gymnastics on the flagstaff, and he at once ordered the man to descend. As no notice was taken of this order, and tho constable had some doubt as to his ability to climb the mast, ho went on his way, leaving the supposed sailor to his amusement. A'tdhe ■nmnrnations'for the re-election of the now Ministry [live of the latter were opposed, and two were unopposed. It was believed that all would he re-elected. There has been a great exposure of the manipluation of the Land Act by permr. sions and evasion of the penalties for noncompliance with the conditions. The Times and Mines, the late ‘Ministerial journal, received atjthe rate of 701)07. a year in ’Government ’advertisements. It is determined by the new Government to nullify the:Sair,Francisco'pcstel arrangement between Messrs Webb andDuffy. Mr. Hoey’s appointment has been rescinded. Tho new Government promises not to interfere in the fiscal policy at present. Kicholls and'Lester, the Paramatta river murderers have been executed. Both of them confessed their guilt, acknowledged the justice of their sentence, and expressed a hope that young men would take warning and profit by their sad example. Lester said that the untimely end would bo the death of his mother, who resides in England. A great yield has been obtained from the Daylestord mine. 360 ouces of gold were obtained from 12 tons of stone. Appell, alevantingSanbhurst sharebroker, was intercepted on board the Mail ■ steamer at the heads, and taken prisoner with a large sura of money in his possession. “ Captain Moonlite,” tho Egertou Bank robber, and one of the gaol breakers at Ballarat, has been re fakes, with two others. An organisation, consisting of Messrs. Coppin, Harwood, Stewart, and Hennings, has been formed to rebuild the Theatre Royal. A proposal has also been made to rebuild the Opera House.
