(Per Gektille cb Co.) Dunedin, May 16, 5 r.ii. The Court of Appeal sat yesterday. The Attorney-General appeared against Gmytbics, whose case was adjourned, to enable him to-amend bis petition by striking out irrelevant matter. A Washington telegram, via Suez, says that a Committee of the Houso of Congress bad recommended the payment of a subsidy of balf-a-million dollars to Webb’s line, Heavy floods have occurred in Marlborough, but fortunately attended with but little damage. -Mr. Edward do Carle was found drowned in the Buller yesterday. It is supposed lie fell overboard from one of the steamers lying at the wharf. The debate on the Educational Question is still proceeding, Mr. Hickey moved a resolution asking the General Assembly to impose a charge of 21. on the Chinese for miners’ rights; also that the gold duty be reduced at the rate of 6d per ounce yearly. Mr. Reid’s amendment, simply asking for a reduction of the gold duty, was carried. Mr. F. Menzies’ motion, authorising the ■Government to reduce the agricultural lease rents to Is. 6d. per acre, in the event of the Land Bill not passing the General Assembly, ■was carried. The financial statement will be made tomorrow. The fealance-sbaat shows a reduction of •the overdraft of more than 50,0001.
