BLACK’S

(FROMA CORRESPONDENT.) May 8. We may now safely say, (after a spell of eight mouths with scarcely a day’s rain) that winter has fairly set in, during the last fortnight we have had good heavy showers every twenty four hours, and last night has covered the surrounding mountains with snow to the very foot, which is most likely to remain so all the season. Mining matters are proceeding slowly, no change of any note to report since my last. Graham’s party on the township, are working steadily and perseveringly on, but we have not heard of their making as yet any great stroke in the shape of gold. Business does not appear to be very brisk at present, our storekeepers complain of a scarcity of gold. Our fanners are all taking advantage of the moist weather and soft ground, to start their ploughs, many of which are now at work in the district. On Saturday evening last we had a little excitement in our quiet township— some fifteen or sixteen of the gentlemen resident about Black’s, assembled at the Shamrock Hotel to present Mr. Dennison with a testimonial as a mark of respect he was well entitled to, as after a residence of four years as clerk in the Bank of N. S. Wales here, by bis kind and courteous behaviour to all classes; he won the respect and good will of all. After spending a pleasant hour or two, the party broke up well satisfied with their evening’s entertainment.
