ALEXANDRA.
(from our correspondent.) Have you seen the uartz ? Oh, hang the quartz, No. The very word is becoming distasteful to me, but I saw the gold in the magnificent specimens brought in from the Butcher’s gully reef, if that is what you are alluding to, Ah yes, and so and so. This is about the only thing to be heard from morning to night, since a parcel of specimens was brought in by by the manager, as he said to cheer up the waning energies of the dispirited shareholders. The excitement is now somewhat abated, but I assure you when the arrival of the Illustrious strangers was made known, trade and business were cast to the winds, and one and all skedaddled to interview them. There was only one thing wanted to give real zest to the whole thing—charge for admission—only fancy a bob a nob, why I verily believe enough would have been raised to have paid for a case of champagne to celebrate the event. It is seldom I smile even, but I actually was seized r with a fit of oachinnation to witness the strange feelings produced by thestartling intelligence. How ever, to the specimens—a parcel was brought in during the week, which show very good gold. Tho manager of the reef asserts that at the presenttimeit looks very well,, and he holds out hopes of giving still better news in the course of a few weeks. Arrangements are not yetcomplete to have a trial crushing, but before I next greet you, I hope the stampers will have done their duty ; the result 1 will fail not in duly wiring you if necessary. . The next most important venture in the district(and out of quartz,) is that of the Ovens Company on the Mjv’uihcrikia, the difficulties successfully battled with and quelled by this conipany'have bean of no slight character, and they now, 1 am pleased to reportarein a fair way of being repaid for all; they have reached the bottom and struck He. When 1 know the exact quantities I will enlighten yon, hut lifting of an inquisitive turn of mind, I may found out for myself before being told, when, as a natural consequence, I will subscribe myself, yours &c., with the amount. There is another party in this district, under ordinary circumstances, who would deserve a passing mention, I mean tho Manuherikia Company, hut, extraordinary to say, they are off the run, and, as it appears, they will persist in prospecting and not sticking to the rim. I will close by saying theirs is a valuable and good property but handled with but little judgment. There are plenty of other companies and parties all of whom, if their names were mentioned, would occupy a full column of your paper, so rather than inflict such a punishment on you, I will merely say they are jolly. The fleet of flat bottoms and shovel noses' ycleped dredges have betaken themselves to their stations, with but one exception, the Calutea, none we able to reach bottom.
