FOURTEN MILE BEACH.
(COMMUNICATHD.) I must throw myself on your mercy for not willing before,,hut.l iiitohdond waiting until some tangible result was arrived at by the prospectors of the quartz reef in this locality, and, moreo-er, I have been, deep in the mysteries of the quartz reefing vernacular and trying my utmost to master the technicalities of the profession, so that my communications on the subject way bo “au fait.”
Hanging walls, foot walls, casing, underlavs, and dips have been my imussant study for the past month; an.l, notwithstanding the ns -idrity with which I have endeavoured lo follow my tutorm these matters, lam about iis proficient in tho subject as before L commenced. The fact is, I have had so much of it that lam tired of listening, as it is all quartz talk down here. It is carried *n such an extern, that WB< ev>. arc my abhorrence and wh rever Iso a win Ha s over a shaft with a rope attach d, I am sure to meet with some o'om Ino dhy "ho will gratuitously inform me tha 1- the store is widening, or the shaft will have to go another 20 feet be. fore they can “ strike i!u.”'
However here :os for 'he news. . Messrs Tier n and Note are getting a face to Hie drive they ink nd cutting into their ; drift, at a co oilirably lower level than . where they struck the quartz lode, and are 1 carrying a good wi Uh i f s one with them as they posh on their woikmou, they will hav; a r dal crush! .gof a few tons at an early date, thin r salt of wnieh I shall advise you. Bye the Rvo wo bad a visit from “Seven Fin-rare I Jack ’ las' week with, petition pray in f r the xt-.msion f ho Alexandra Comm mage. Ti: ap oirs tk.-.t Messrs Turnbull .uni (!re : g are putting on the screw in that locality, an ! ireuioriaiisi g the Government seems to be the nn'y le innate remedy in the hands of the Mauuherika folk. I am afraid they will not make much by the motion as witness the Mount Bengerites and the Moa Flat run. The Provincial Council Chambers are heaped up with petitions, and I have no doubt tho hangers on of that s ipient body make a very good thing by the sale of waste paper, some tons of which must be periodically placed at thrir disposal, for petitions arc never more heard of after they have been presmied in that quarter. Very likely they may he absorbed in the i toddy his Honor must indulge in before he can prime himself to the talking pitch. I perceive the Queenstown people have placed Mr. Rallensfein at the head of the poll. That gentleman, as Wittlcs observes, may ha only an acclimatised T.ap, and, perhaps, may bo only able to express himself in half-caste "English; still he cannot well benefit himself without his constituents participating. There is one great thing in his favor —liis stake in the district consists of something more than a rmall-tootli comb and a dclapidated collar-box. His abilities in the House may not he at once recognised? but ho must ultimately be brought to the front as a medium between the white population of Now Zealand and the small-pox introducing Scamlanavians. However, if 111’.: electors of the Wukatip prefer German silvo. to Hrittannia metal ia nobody’s affair but their own. M’ittles, who very narrowly escaped tho clutches of the law, for calling his wife a “Jenny Muk.",” because she will insist upon carrying panniers, forwards you, through my comra iuicati- n, a list of the tariff at the Roxburgh Police Court, during the absence ! of the Resilient Magistrate, for the mulctin'of mihl offenders for their playful and innocent breaches of the peace. To say the least of it, it is rather a puzzle to men like your correspdn lent, whoso taste for the “jui e ofijtho juniper” and boisterous animal spirits have frequ ntly placed them on tho vcrr.o of making their congee to the Justices of the Peace for the district. To displacing an 1 ye-to-th, and nuking your ad versa: y swallow at the same hue four of his raolais, with costs of Court added, 21. 15s. ? lam sorry to inform you that caccelhes tcribewli lias made its appearance in the ■column-; of your contemporary the Tuapcha Times, under its most virulent aspect. Immediate s'.cps s i u; d be taken to prevent the spread of this most noxious epidemic. If t!it Government would enforce strict sanitary laws —and strait waistcoats, with r.spcot to infect d p -rsous, beside preventing a heavy tax upon, newspaper editors, th -y would confer a lasting hendit upon soci tv at lan e.
My motive for drawing your attention to tins nr st serious matter is by the request of Mr. Lh C. T. Muddle, who strenuously repudiates the authorship of a letter reported ns having emanated from him, and which appeared in the columns of the Tuapcha Times some two or three months back, and signed Timo. Air. Muddle begs to state that he never wrote under that r.om lie plume, and moreover, wisher to add that he is afraid of no man.
It appears in the same issue of the Tiwpcha Times, that the Alexandra correspondent of that paper is ambitious of letting the world know that ho belongs to that supposed defunct, ami highly respected deeply regretted body, once known as the Resurrectionists, from his feeble attempts at remrtita'ing that poor old worn out, and obsolete orniil: logical joke, that departed this life, an 1 was buried with all honor during the Piscine era in the Duustan, or perhaps the gentleman wishes to revive the obi Rnglish spur' of hawking from the auxin manner in which he informs the public, of the whereabouts, habit?, fee., of the heron and quails. Tie true a heron was seen in the environs of Alexandra, thinking perhaps, to take up his quarters in the remains of the .■ nly forest in the neighbor I .!' od, but, fi-mn some unexplained cause, he wing'd his flight down stream again, whether it was that the T■ a i'.a Times ’co-respondent, was coming on bins. 1 tanins say, yet I scarcely think that could have been the reason for his hasty flight, as there is no'hing tin my opinion; of the falcon in the op: •oaranco of ihe Tuapcla Times cortespcndciat but his herd:.
