According to the report recently issued by the Directors of Convict Prisons, the total cost of Portland, Portsmouth, and Chatham together for 1870, was 129,006/. 3s. Gd., and this outlay included every conceivable item, maintenance, clothing, gratuities to discharged prisoners, travelling expenses, salaries, and repairs of buildings. Against, this, the prisoners executed work for Government, which is valued by actual measurement at 143,507/. Bs, a somewhat solid argument in favor of the profitable employment of criminals, before which shot drill and crank must retire to the limbo for things obsolete and medkeval.
