DARWINIAN THEORY.

—o— The Graphic says that, if anything could prove the Darwinian theory, it would be the dense, Senseless, astounding brutality of some human beings. Here is a case from Bolton. A collier comes cpiietly home from his work at night. To his wife, to whom it seems he is without cause, jealous, he says briefly, “I’ve somethin’ to tell thee.” She asks, “ What?’ “I’ll tell thee iu a bit,” he says, as ho proceeds lock both doors and put the keys in his pocket, and saying, “I’m going to mu der thee,” cold-bloodedly sets his bu! -dog. a ferocious creature weighing over thirty pound, to worry the woman This the bul -dog' does, -suing great him *of flesh out of her; and the man helps the brute wit bows and kicks showered upon the won an while she is struggling w’th the dog, At last she escapes sou ehow, and is taken to a hospital where nine huge wounds are dre .;ed, and she is told that she cannot te pronounced out of danger of her life for a month The man is taken to tiro lock-up, and in the morning is, by the Bolton magistrates, sent to gaol for six months for wife-beating! We don’t know whether this kind of brutality is common down at Bed ton, but it occurs to us that any other place in the United Kingdom the “wife beater,” as he is mildly termed, would have been remanded till the result of his wife’s injuries were known ; and that even in the event of her recovery lie would be committed to trial for at-

■‘tv pted murder, with a minor count "or wounding w’th intent to do'grievous bodily harm—both offences involving penal servitude.
