ALEXANDRA.
—o—(fuom our cohues to M ENT,) A public meeting convened by IheMayor w.i 3 held in the Library building on Tucs. luy evenening last. Mr. J. C. Chappie, Mayor, said he had called the meeting on a requisition signed by a number of people to take into consideration the commonage piestion ; ho was sorry to see so much pathy among the people, the question had bejir a source of annoyance fur years past, during which time, saving just a casual mention of the subject to the various candidates who occasionally dropped in their way, nothing whatever had been done, the time however had arrived when it was incumbent on them to take somc aotion, and not allow themselves to be completely trod upon. The promise by both Mr. M ‘Andrew and Mr. Reid that the eommongge should be increased had not been carried out. this was the fault of their people in not agitating, it was plain to every one that present commonbge was not large enough, and the energy of the people should be directed to having it increased. The fencing off of just the flat by Messrs. Gregg and Turnbull, and the impounding by all cattle grazing inside that xence, had stirred them up to action, and now that, they had snmething tangible to work upon a grievance to redrees they must leave no stone unturned to obtain the denied result. Messrs. Rivers, O’Regan, Hi Ihouso, and •W. Robertson, addressed the meeting, and resolutions were passed, appointing a committee, and empowcslng them to memorialise the Government for an increase of commonage. The meeting then separated.
Of mioing items. - Conroy’s reef is for a time idle, the water in (he shaft having increased with depth to such an extent, that machinery must he applied to lift it. Butcher’s reef is still being winked, and the stone raised looks payable. After the crushing, I shall be in a better position to giveanopinionasto itspayinaqualities: still water runs deep, and from the fact of solitt'e being said about, 1 augur goad results. The want of rain is severely felt on the West bank of the Mulyneux, a number of hands being thrown out of work thereby'. And still they come—the Heathen Chinee is again mustering in good force in the neighb irhood. On the Manulu-rikia, between Galloway Station, and Robertson’s Balmoral, a large number of set in, and all are doing well, as also, are a large mob on the Manorbur,. Flat. The Ovuis Company have bottnied their paddock on the Manuherikia, and as far as I can learn with good results, so favorable in fact is the prospect, that if they are maided to work for a month, they will be well repaid for all outlay and trouble. The Manuhtrikia Company have.again set in to the terraces on the Manuherikia at the rear of Theyera and Beck’s Brewery, aid I hear are doin ' well.
