GREAT FLOOD at GREY MOUTH —o—[by ELECTRIC TEL' FKAPH.] —O [We published a portion of the following as an “Extra 1 on Monday afternoon last ] Dunedin, Feb. 12, 5.30 p.m. There has been a great flood at the Gieymouth. The protective works gave way, and the water burst in at the top of the town, spreading descrue.tion eveiywhere. Houses,| hotels, bridges, and fully one-third of the quay have been washed away, and the debris carried into the sea. Upwards of fifty buildings are gone. Other buildings . have rolled over one another, while some are a mass of ruins. Hundreds of families are homeless. Many were taken off the roofs of houses by boats. The water is now subsiding. LATER. Only one boy, named William Hall, was known to be drowned. LATEST. It is feared that the township of the Little Grey Junction has disap peared by the flood, The news received up to the present time, is that the whole of the township of the Twelve Mile is gone. ■ One man was seen going down the river on a snag yelling for help, which was impossible to render him. All roads in the Grey "Valley are swept away, suspending all communication to the Reefs. A large’ population is there in danger of starvation. The following additional particulars wc extract from the Daily Times : “ Accounts of the damage done by the floods have been received from the upcountry districts. At the Brunner Coal Mines, stock, Ac , to the extent of 700 1, was destroyed The only buildi’ gs standing are the Commercial Hotel and Messrs. Watson and Malloy’s store. Horses and dairy cows have been lost, Mr J. M. < lamphel’s store, stock, and horses were swept away. Mr. M-Kenzie’s land and crops were washed away, In the Grey Valley Messrs. Ferguson and M'Cardy’s crop;, and fencing have suffer' d so verely Two bridges have been do strayed at the Little Giev function, and Mr, Ba uion’s store has .eeuca - ried away U. the Junction the crops are all damaged, and the river habroken away the old road, iuundatin . sevral fdams. At Terminus, Mr, Hardy's store was washed away The whole country around Messrs. Doolau and Ueares’s farm is flooded. Ac Moonlight Creek, Mr. Davey’s store and hotel have gone bodily, likewise all his stock and garden have aho disappeared. The stores ot Messrs Middleton, Gath, Aitkin, and M‘Gill, have also been destroyed, hut the stock has for the most part been saved. At Reefton an immense landslip took place above the township and the brewery and a number of houses were swept away. Mo-t of the people at Grey month passed Thursday night up trees. At Greymonth, over seventy houses and stores have been swept away.”
