THE DUNSTAN FLAT.
—o—(TO THE EDITOR OF THE DUSSTAM TIMES. Sir—ln your last issue the subject of your leading article was the question whether a lead of gold does not exist on the Dunstan Flat, and in fact goes on to say that, there is not the slightest doubt but that there is gold there, which has been proved by the driving of a tunnel from the river some five hundred feet, and very coarse gold obtained, but the bed rock dipping so much, the water was too heavy to sink to the bottom to test the same. Now Sir, from the statement above mentioned there must be a certain amount of truth, and from my own knowledge is perfectly correct, and would suggest that an undertaking bo adopted for the purpose of sinking a shaft and settling the question, of the existence of payable gold there. It may bo thought by some that the bottoming of a shaft would be of so much expense, and then so doubtful as to the result, that there would be but few to enter into the speculation—Now Sir, it is my firm belief that the expense would not be'so great, for we must not go from what it cost o t the previous question, for the prices of material and that of labor arc very much reduced, ami I believe from the existence of so many , experienced miners in the district, that the thing, which was on the former occasion,' given up in despair, would be now accomplished without the slightest difficulty. I " would suggest that it be once more attempted, and that a Company be formed’ for the purpose, and I' doubt not, but that’ the shares would be very quickly taken up. If the speculation should turn out a -favor-- ■: able one, the benefit to the district would Ibe large indeed, if on the other hand, it fail, ; : it would not be such a very heavy loss to | the shareholders, but that the people of the : town of Clyde would not be backward in ; contributing their share in the settling of i the question, which would so very much ’ ! benefit them. Hoping to hear some other views expressed upon the subject, I beg to remain. Sir, Your’s, &c., i Fob. 12, 1372r- •• ■ J
