ELOQUENT SCAVENGERS.
o The scavengers of Carlisle, (says the Liverpool Mercury) have been agitating for an advance of wages. They have laid their case before the Local Board of Health, and base their claims on such high principles of humanity and philantrophy that it is not to be wondered at they were at once granted. The scavengers stated that, having always had a “ share of freedom ” in the board’s esteem, they claim a certain right to apply to your respective boards upon any occasion wherein our earthly welfare are parties larly interested.” Nothing could oblige the scavengers more at present than the entertainment of their application “ As all kinds of necessaries to keep our mental existence in motion is getting so morally high in price is that our weekly wages will scarce meet the demands of our outlays; therefore, your industrial scavengers most humbly petition your respective boards, and solicit pour philantrophic exertions in our behalf to add a little more to our weekly wages to meet the standard prices of our vitals ” The petition concluded by stating that whatever might be the answer to this earnest application, it would be “ received wii hout a murmur,” and their undersigned humble servants would ever pray.
