o—(COMMUNICATED.) Nov. 27. Our quiet Township was thrown into a state of groat excitement this morning (Sunday) hy the shooting of a Chinaman named Ho Chow, caught in the not of stealing gold from the tub at the tailbox of John Ewing’s claim at Surface Hill. The facts of the case are aa follows:—About half past throe on ,Sunday morning, a miner named James Leonard, in the employment of Ewing was at work in the claim, and saw something moving at the end of the tail Race. This excited hie snspiesion and he want in the direction of the object which he found to ba a Chinamen, helping himself to the contents of the tub. On finding himself discovered, John made tracks, carrying with him, however the tin dish and dirt taken from tho tub. Leonard pursued, and soon overtook him, when the Chinaman turned and made a blow at Leonard with a thick stick which he'earried. Fortunately he missed his aim. A hand to hand contest ensued, and Leonard succeeded, after a dos perato fight cm tying tho feet; n 1 tail of tho Chinaman together and securing his hands. He then ran to Ewing’s and gave the alarm. Ewing immediately came, armed with a gun and finding the Chinamanstrugglingtoeseape from the custody ofLeonard, fired, and shot him in the shoulder, inflicting a severe wound. John was handed over to po!io e Constable Morten, who also arrested his mate, who was found snug in bed. They were sent to the Hogburn to be dealt with These men have been carrying on their nefarious trade for some months, and have taken a considerable quantity of gold from tho tubs and tail races, notwithstanding tho strict watch that has been kept on their movements. Great credit is due to Leonard for his pluck and it is proposed to present him with a substantial, reward. Nov. 2S. Ewing, for shooting tho Chinaman, has had to find bail to fhe amount of 20W. for his appearance at Naseby to answer tho charge The Chinaman is not expected to recover, and his depositions have been taken. Tho charge against Ewing will be heard on Wednesday, at Mount Ida.
