Berlin, October 9. The Reichstag convoked for the 16th instant. The budget to be submitted, professes to increase a proportion of outlay for the Navy and coast defences by five million thalers. The workmen of Ghent are on strike, and demand a reduction of hours, and double pay for overtime. A Protestant League is in course of formation throughout Germany, for the expulsion of all Jesuits from the country. At a meeting at Darmstadt, resolutions were passed, opposing the doctrine of infallibility as inimical to the sovereignty of the state, liberty of the people, and freedom of conscience. The Kingdom of Bavaria is to call its for reign ambassadors, and in future be represented only as a portion of the German Empire. AUSTRIA, A rumor is current that the Emperor Francis Joseph is seriously disposed to abdicate. The cause assigned is his despondency on account of conscious unfitness for meeting the constitutional crisis, which threatens the dissolution of the Austrian Empire. ITALY. Route, Oct. Bth, The Italian Government demanded the oath of loyalty to the King, from all professors in the colleges of Rone. Twenty professors refused to take the necessary oath. Two convents have been occupied by Italian troops, a difference arisen between France and Italy, respecting official debts. The Italian Government express a determination that no professor shall be permitted to exercise his functions without first taking the oath. SPAIN. Serious Republican agitation has occurred. The ministry has resigned and the Cortes is adjourned without the election of a President. A new cabinet is being formed, who announce measures of economy, by reducing the salaries of the civil aervants. King Amadeus has been enthusiastically received at Longrous. TURKEY. A dispatch from Constantinople reports seventy deaths by cholera in one clay, and the water supply failing. Subsequent news states that cholera is subsiding in Turkey, Russia and Germany. The Moorish Kabyls at Sagesta menace the Sultan’s aulhority in Turkey. Troops have been despatched. The Spanish Government remains passive unless its flag is insulted. AMERICA. A great fire occurred in San Francisco on September 23, It destroyed the wholesale stores of Reddington, Hcrstle and Co., and another in Harpendiaries Block. Total loss estimated at nearly one million dollars. A fire at Chicago, o*> the 7th of October, burnt over seven blocks. Loss, 520,000 dollars. On October 8, a second fire at Chicago destroyed 10,000 buildings. Loss 150,000,000 dollars. All the business part of the city is destroyed, and 150,000 people are homeless Fires in the forests to the north in Michigan Wisconsin, and. lowa, have destroyed millions of dollars worth of property. Many lives were lost at Pensanka. At Wisconsin 30lives were lost, and the whole town burnt. Prince Alexis is expected with the Russian fleet at New York, and will proceed thence overland to Washington and San Francisco. London, Oct. 2. At this season’s wool sales, 36,189 boh-s were sold to date. The market opened at Id. to lid. par pound in advance for all descriptions. This has since increased to fully 2d. over July sales. Lincoln hoggs dull at 16d. wethers 24d., Southdown ewes 22d., Irish hoggs 25d., do. wethers 24d. The present consumption promises to be maintained, and firm rates will prevail for the next few months. Flax, —A further advance in Manilla has materially assisted the New Zealand market, 1353 bales have realised full rates. Medium-partly cleaned, 24/. to 26/. IDs. ; good-medium, 29/. Good and fine cleaned 32/. to 33/. 10s. Corn since the 11th September, a fall of Cd. to a Is. per quarter took place, owing to millers having fully stocked. Quotation for New Zealand, 625. Much New Zealand wheat has lately arrived in bad condition, and only saleable at 435., for cattle food or starch. Cause of ilamage supposed to be bad harvesting. Tallow, fair competition, beep, 335. to 435. ; Beef, 365. to 425. STOCK MARKET. The gradual improvement in New Zealand Stocks has been arrested by many parcels brought to market, but since Consolidate Bonds highly satisfactory. NEW YORK. Wool met with good enquiry. During the months the arrivals were 33,322 Bales of New Zealand, anil 84,523 Australian, Fleeces sold penny to one penny higher that last prices. Flax is dull, the most of it offered was bought in at 25/ to 27/ per ton, only 400 Bales of Medium and good sold at 24/ to 33/. 10 0. Tallow in good demand 37 to 43. SAN FRANCISCO.
