PROVINCIAL FINANCES.
From the balance sheet aild statement Of expenditure for the twelve months ending the Slstof March, 1871, issued by the Pro ; Vincial Treasurer of Otago, and also from the estimate of revenue and expenditure for the ensuing year, ending the 31st of March, 1872, we extract the following facts and figures The revenue for the past year amounted to 295,7292, 6a. 10d., and the lexpenditure lor the like period was 349,9572. 19s; lid. The loan liabilities of the province are 1,211,7102. Bs. 8d; ; the general balance against the province for the year, exclusive of loan liabilities, 97,5782. 18s. 9d. The following are the heads of revenue received: General Government, 117,3892.85.; sale of Crown lands, assessment on runs and hundreds, and gold-fields’ revenue, 110,8192. 2s. 9d. : gold export duty, 19,8952. 15s. 3d. j dues, taxes, fines, and repayments, 16,7362; 4s. 7d. ; education, 2,4682. 14s. lid. ; gaol, 942. ; tolls on roads and incidental receipts, 12,1512. 4s. 7d. ; licenses. 12,9302. 17s. 6d. ; Southland railways, port charges, and sheep inspection, 3,2432. 19s. 3d. The statement of expenditure for the past yearshows the following disbursements, appearing in the first column of figures appended hereto. Education is estimated to need an outlay of 1,4202., for salaries to Inspectors and Secretary, 12,9422. 10s., teachers’ salaries; 8002. to grammar schools ; 4,4222. 10s., special allowance to Southland schools ; 2,2052., salaries to Rector and Masters of Dunedin High School; 5302. to Lady Principal and assistants of Girls’ School ; 2752., for Provincial Scholarships ; and 2502. for incidental expenses. Among miscellaneous items of expenditure 1002. is put down for Labor Exchange. Goldfields expoediture, as regards salaries, is meted out as follows : Eight Wardens : one at 5502., four at 5002., two at 400/., and one at 1002. ? seven Receivers, at 3002. ; five bailiffs, at ISO2. ; two Inspectors of Depasturing Districts, one three months, at 3502- ; two Chinese Interpreters, 4502. Hoad Engineers are to receive as salaries : Chief Engineer, 6002. ; one District Engineer, 3502. ; two District Engineers, 3002.; Assistant, 1502. ; Draughtsman, 1102. ; and Railway Manager, 3502. The salaries under the General Hoad Board are calculated at 3832. 9s. Sd. Tire Homo Agency is to cost 1.0002., and 5002. is estimated as the provincial expenditure on immigration. Grants in aid to roads arc put down at 14,0102. ; to Benevolent Institution and country hospitals, 5,0002. ; and municipalities, liabilities, 1.5002., and new (10s. per 12. rates collected), 1,5002. Under the heading, Treasurer’s Miscellaneous, appear, inter alia , compensation for road deviations, cancelling of leases and purchase of land, 15,0002. ; Government auctioneer, 5002. ; compensa--1 ion to officers on retirement from service, 4,0902. ; water supply on gold-fields, 322. (!); expenses of the visit of his Excellency the Governor, 4502. j'gold robbery, Clyde, 4572.; expenses of Mining Conference, 4002. ; compensation to W. Smitham, 3332. In the estimates for expenditure on roads and works, the following provision is made for the local requirements of this district; Rock and Pillar to Dunstan, 1002. ; Dunstan to Cromwell, 5002. ; Cromwell to Queenstown, 9502. ; Teviot to Alexandra, 2002. ; Palmerston to Eweburn, 2,3262. 95.; Eweburn to Dunstan, 4002. ; Cromwell to Wanaka, 502-; Beck’s to Dunstan Creek, 202. ; Hill’s Creek to Dunstan Creek, 402. ; Dunstan to Nevis, 502, ; Cromwell to Nevis, 602. ; Cromwell to Bendigo Gully, 1002. ; Albertown to Cardrona, 502. ; Arrow to Hay’s Lake and Morven Ferry, 502. ; to Arthur’s Point, 502. ; and to Twelve-Mile (Mace-town), 802. On the Other hand, between Cromwell and Queenstown, Teviot and Alexandra, Palmerston and Eweburn, the aggregate expenditure in excess of the appropriations amounted to 5G62. 3s. Od. Works not provided for, and unforseen contingencies, are put down at 1,8002.
