SOUTH AFRICAN DIAMOND FIELDS.
The special correspondent of the New York World says “Du Tint’s Pan, situate twenty miles sou'h of Pneil. is turning out to he the largest and richest camp in the diamond'district of South Africa, at least fifteen thousand white and five thousand coloured persons, making a popu ation of twenty thousand persons, men, women, and children, working at Du Tyit’sPaii and adjoining farms (De Been’s and BnTontieu) Diamonds are la-ino turned out every day, of from one to twenty carats in weight, and once a week one of fifty and over one hundred carats in weight is turned out. Three diamonds, each weighing over twenty carats, were turned Out at De Beei.’s from thiee adjoining claims. “ A man nanied Neniemer has taken out forty diamonds, weighing one hundred and fifty carats, from" his claim. The hole he has worked out is only about six feet wide and fifteen feet long, with an average of ten feet in depth, finding diamonds all the way down, the largest a twenty-three carat g.m.
“America heats them all. Lasi week Mr. J, B. Hopkins, from Lockport" Pa., came to -South Africa two months ago, and last Monday, the wind blowing hard,causing such thick clouds of dust that no one could remain in their claims. Hopkins meandered out of the camp and over the plain. Observing some garnets shining about a mile and a half from the camp, he dropned on his knees and elbow, and, ni king them up, commenced to scrape for more, when a bright point came to view. Sera ing under this, out popped a magnificent fifty-five ad an eighth carat diamond, octahedron, flawless, and speckless, of that peculiar straw c lor that is so fashionable in England, and worth in the United -States at least $75,000.
